I'm giving serious thought to getting my CDL through a local Detroit area school so I won't get tied down to a particular carrier at the start of a new career.

Are there any good trucking companies with terminals in/near the Detroit area that frequently make trips to the west coast, particularly the Sacramento and Seattle areas?

unfortunately, with the economic slowdown in the area, freight in and out of MI has dropped off a lot. Your best bet would be to get some experience and then talk to some local/regional carriers, such as MPH out of Fremont (near Muskegon), or Van Eerden, who runs Herman Miller furniture out west (in reefers) and then brings produce back.
