Update: They're gonna fix the rear main free of charge. The cynical way of looking at it is, they broke it, they know it but won't say it. The greatfull way of looking at it is it's not technically covered under warranty and they're doing me a solid by fixing. The service guy quoted me 1700.00 for the job!!

Geezus 1700!!!! I had Peterbilt do mine on my old 3406E and cost me $470.
-
And actually I didn't pay for it. It was covered under warranty. But they sent the receipt to my house and that's what the total parts and labor were. -
Glad they are fixing it.

Hey can I ask what happened to cause the rebuild? The reason I ask is cause on some warranties they will only fix what is broken.
Did they give you a list of what they replaced?? -
They did the Step1 overhaul that Detroit advertises.
They rebuilt it because of extreme blowby. Once they got it apart the found that all six cylinders were badly scored. Measured 8.5in blowby without being on a dyno or having a load on the engine.
Complete set of six cylinder kits
- Piston domes, skirts, pins and bushings
- Piston rings
- Cylinder liners
- Liner seals
Cylinder head bolts
Thermostats
Oil pressure regulator
Oil pressure relief valve
Overhaul gasket kit
Lower end bearing kit
- Lower main bearings/shells
- Upper main bearings/shells
- Connecting rod bearings/shells
- Thrust washers
Rocker cover gasket -
I worked on Detroits for over 20 years. Don't hang yourself. Glad they're repairing it for you, but....they're right, you're wrong...sorry.
It is a one piece seal, removable only by removing the Transmission.
Detroits have had a rear seal situation for a long, long time, but have gotten a lot better. It was a material problem.
They will/should add a sleeve to give the new seal a fresh surface to ride on, because you have worn a groove in the crankshaft.
Unless (when o/h was done) they did the main bearings one at a time, it is possible that (by removing all the inner main bearing caps which might allow the crank to rest too heavily on the rear seal) the seal itself got damaged.
That method (removing all center caps at once) is not uncommon. -
Either way, they fixed it. They've seen my truck more than I have the short time I've had it. -
i guess sometimes that the way things go. i had a 77 f-150 with a 390 in it. i replaced all the bearings and a week later rear main went out on me. i was lucky itwas rope seal but it still cos me 350 to have fixed cause there was 2 feet of snow on the ground and i wasnt laying in it. but with the same note my 99 Volvo vn had 1.5 million miles on it when the engine went, actually it was the hed that went tanks to an inept mechanic who doesnt know to use new head bolts and how to use a torque wrench properly, but in the 1.5 mill, never once had a rear main seal go. in fact only oil dont relize these trucks are not hot rods, treat em with car and they will last a long time, i know, 1.5 million miles on my last truck
