I took my original turbo off around 1.2 million miles and it was due to the wastewater actuator failing. I gave it away and it's still working hard on a farm truck.
If you keep the oil clean and ease into and out of the throttle, there's no real reason they shouldn't last the life of the engine.

I suggest changing it before 700k. 750k max. I blew a brand new Garret around 200-350k. Another Truck, new original blew at 9O0k, Then a new B&G lasted 750k till it blew, replaced with same, lasted 800k. Replaced before it blew.Average seems to be 750k. Why risk it? They’re cheap, easy to change. Avoid the extra trouble fixing it on the road, Needing to steam the CAC clean, or replace if it gets full of oil. Just more $$. Chances are pretty good it will blow before 900k. IMO. Add water pump at 750k also. It too will probably last 850k tops. Avoid the hassle.

Had a turbo let go at 90k miles. Truck(glider) was brand new at that time(2014). Ironic thing is when it blew. The impeller blew into the exhaust pipe before it went up into muffler. I thought the baffles where blown out of the muffler. Because I could here tic,tic,rattle,rattle sound for 2 weeks. Low and behold theirs the impeller. Now how does a factory trained union payed (freightliner) dealer(Transchicago) miss finding the impeller from the turbo. Only reason it went to the dealer is because it was warranted. I have learned from then on sometimes you just eat the bill. And get back on the road. Truck sat at dealership for a week. WTF!!!!!
