The 220 engine was 743 inches. The hot rod 335 was s 300 that your local shop pulled the blower and put on a turbo instead. Because of less parasitic loss and the same boost, the turbo version put out more horsepower. The N14, which is the same size as the nc855 doesn't have a compression release.

One of the instructors at NADC would take the wires for the throttle safety switch for the jakes, and twist they together , the pull the throttle wide open with a bungee cord , then turn the jakes on. Old 8V71 was trying to rev , and the jakes trying to slow her down. Straight pipes , inside on a run stand. Sound was deafing . He would walk away and come back a couple hours later.

That's enough, THAT'S ENOUGH, make them stop!!! Sorry guys, I just don't share your love of old Detroit's. I drove several, and one was worse than the next. I drove a tri-axle Ford dump truck with a 238 and an air 4x4. What a worthless POS, shifting constantly, and another time, I drove a tri-axle IH 4300 tank truck with a 318. The boss said, before you go ( on a 75 mile delivery 1 way) check the oil, and take a few gallons with you. Nothing on the stick, put 3 gallons in before I left, and took 2 gallons with me. While the 318 clearly had more power than the 238, it was slow goin'. When I got to the delivery, ( 75 miles, remember) I checked the oil, again, nothing on the stick, put the 2 gallons in, was still a gallon low.
We used to call them, "fuel converters". Converts diesel fuel into noise.:biggrin_2559:

Hearing a Jimmy now a days is a nice trip down memory road. Driving one for a living would be a nightmare I would wish on no one!

I'm helping a friend with a mid-50's Pettibone "Speedall" front end loader with a 4-53(?) inline, and we went through the same deal getting it running after a 4 year slumber. It actually runs pretty good, ( aside from a massive oil leak under the motor) but makes the neighbors uneasy, as most have never heard that type of noise before. We've come a long ways in diesel technology, but there was a time, when almost everything was powered by Detroit's. And yes, I have seen them run backwards ( Mack too)You'd have 3 speeds forward and 15 in reverse.:biggrin_2559:

Semi, we are on the same page here, I drove a freightliner with a 6V92 for a couple weeks in 1987 on a 400 mile round trip into the LA area, loaded both ways. We got paid miles + hrs back then but creeping along with that miserable screaming ##@$%#*& underpowered POS, the mileage rate was about 1/4 of what the hourly rate was. Very disappointing when pulling hills in 3rd gear.

Jimmies bobtailed great! We got stuck near Detroit, and did layover in motel. My dad dropped the trailer, and the truck accelerated like a car. Put on load on it, I couldn't figure out how it was a 350.

At one time I drove a straight truck with a 4-53 ( double t ? ) 5 and 2. It qualified for and exceeded every bad report everyone has listed.
However I just will mention some thing for FLD120 because I am not sure if he is just looking or bought one. It was hard for me to learn to like 8V92's and 2fast did a great job. On a daily runner that would not run one morning an injector plunger was stuck. Apparently that allows compression into the fuel rail and no cylinders fire.
