What model of detroit is it from 60 series? And is the engine running smooth? First thing that comes to mind is it some type of valve spring washer or a injector component? Whats the engine history could it be a left over from a previous repair or failure that was lost in head and worked its way over time into crankcase? I am very curious as to what it is aswell.

My best guess is head bolt washer.

Wait!! maby its not a broken part but some sort of a C washer

http://www.jacobsvehiclesystems.com/files/support/docs-pdfs/29901B.pdf Figure 20 washer 18. Had a lot of my 00-01's break.

If that is the peice then it is missing the other peice of it. Does it look broken.

It doesn't look like anything that is part of piston or valve. I wouldn't worry just take valve cover off and look for that peice on the top of jake. If it was part of valve you would have dropped a valve by now.
