"Attend a four week course, with tuition assistance available, to learn how to drive a Class A tractor-trailer. Upon successful completion, you will have obtained your Class A CDL and be given an opportunity to become employed by Con-way Truckload, one of the "Best Fleets to Drive For" as named by The Truckload Carriers Association."

Who can tell me something about this Con-way program?

Its a program they have with U.S. Truck Drivers School. You get pre-hired by Con-way TL and they pay for half of training. No contract as long as you start work with CWTL. You pay 2,000 Con-way pays the rest. After completion of school you attend orientation at Taylor terminal, 5 days and they pay you 25 bucks a day. After orientation 7500 miles with trainer. You can take classes at Taylor, Fenton and Sterling Heights campuses. I think they have a Detroit location also.
I'm scheduled to start school next Monday...Pre-hire only took 2 days for me.

    DenaliDad Thanks this.

Excellent information. Thank you. Is residence provided? I live south of Grand Rapids, so the commute would be a wee bit tough.

Not sure about residence with school. I'm about 35 min. from the Fenton Campus. The recruiter from Con-way asked me if I needed a place to stay for the orientation at Taylor, I passed on that.
I'd call the school and they can give you more info. Ask for John Paul (586)-933-5750. Or call the number on the Con-Way site and ask for a recruiter.

Great posts. I live a little west of Flint. It is February 20, 2012 and I talked to Christine at Conway last week. She recommended two different driving schools in the Detroit area. U.S. was one of them. So, I called the trucking school. I spoke to John Paul at 800-615-4443 and he said the Fenton location is closed now. So....I guess...Sterling Heights is the closest to me. Christine mentioned another school in the Detroit area, the school is called Metropolitan. She said they are still doing the pre-hire program. I can't wait to get started. This is a great forum.

Just a friendly reminder and not bring people's hopes down but more to keep hopes realistic.

-Pre hire letters mean nothing more then you have a chance to go to orientation and will still need to show adequate driving/backing skills to get the job.

-ever convicted of a crime? If so your PRe hire is worthless. If you can't get Haz-mat endorsement and into Canada (passport or passport card) then Con-way will not hire you.

-have back owed child support? Again PRe-hire is worthless since Canada won't let you in.

I agree with Countyboy. Canada and Hazmat are in your future if you try to head to Con-way. They do have exceptions though, drivers that were with CFI prior to Con-way acquiring the company ARE NOT required to do either. So you will find yourself pulling more than your fair share of both. This is one of the few Con-way policies that did not sit well with me from a productivity standpoint. That particular policy has kind of a Union feel to it.
