Question for some of you who know a lot more than me.
we have 37 Rigs running with series 60 14L Detroits. All of them are 100% identical, all 515HP, same turbos, injectors, ECMs etc… all DDEC V
All are non EGR, even the newer 2011 ones as they are powering well service rigs.
my boss bought 4 14L series 60s to rebuild for spares, these are all 2007 EGR engines out of Freightliner trucks.
he wants them identical to the other 37….
Here are some of the differences.
Ours have:
Fuel pumps mounted on Timing cover above compressor.
Compressor drive adapters with large 2 piston compressors.
Single piece gear case covers.
the new ones have two piece gear cases with the bolt on cam housing.
Compressors mounted direct with no adapter and the fuel pump is mounted in the end of compressor.
my question is this…. They are all DDeC V, the four new ones and the 37 we own.
can the 2 pieces gear case be swapped out for a one piece?
what I was considering doing, is when I order the rebuild kits for these four, just giving the parts guy a serial number for one of our engines so that they get the exact same parts.
I have found the one piece gear cases all over the internet for $200-1500 for used ones…. I just want to make sure before I order if they will bolt up…
considering the strange bolt on camshaft box in the two piece, is there a lot internally going on that will have to be changed as well? Like are the cams and cam gears different also? What am I getting myself into?

the 37 probably have a dd4 front case which have different gears personally i like the 2 piece better much easier to work on

Cams are different. Run the engine serial numbers and see if they even use the same head. Some 60 series had different injector seats. May not even be able to put the injectors you want into that head. Thank the blocks are the same but check that also.
You are in for a ride. Like going over the top of a big roller coaster, OH S H I T !!!! Lots of differences in those engines.
Why do you need 4 complete replacement units when you only have 37 running? -
I put them into the NTDA software and it shows the cam and bull gears are the same, same oil pump, same block, same eCM, same head.
One has xx3003 injectors ours have xx3005.
our turbos are bigger. Lots of small differences that are going to make me spend a lot of time hunting parts.
I’m probably only going to do two of them for spares, I’m not real sure why he bought four, he claims before they hired me there was a point when four were broke down at the same time.
I rarely see two of them in here at the same time, if I do it’s never been both with engine problems. -
Never saw those pre EGR 14 liters in anything but motor coaches. The later truck engines had different procedures for valve adjustments. Thought they would be a lot different.
If you have a long block ready to go it will not take long to make her go.
