No, they advance it to induce fuel at later in combustion cycle. It raises cylinder temps for a hotter burn. Rising coolant temps and cyclinder temps. But its later in cycle and dont increase power but before it causes black smoke. Lowing soot. Lower temps increase Nox. But perform better. You will see a .5 mpg drop with the lo nox installed. But it's better for the environment. Just uses more fuel. That ok with the tree huggers.
Combustion at high temperatures causes higher levels of nox. Advanced timing creates higher cylinder peak pressure which creates more heat. I program Detroit's every day to pre low nox settings. Google "nox emissions" and you'll see that I'm right
You are correct on all counts but one. By making the fuel injection event later in the combustion cycle you are retarding the timing. Advancing the timing makes the combustion event happen sooner in the cycle.. You have it backwards.
Well I feel bad for your customers. We shall just disagree. Retarded timing results in lower cylinder temps. It will not burn hot enough to lower nox.
I really hate to get in the middle of this, But as I recall, the lo nox program was a 5% or degree? Retarding of timing, and supposed to only affect mpg by a 5% reduction.
