You can build big power with no smoke to a certain point then to keep increasing power it gets dirty again. Why you ask?? To lower EGT’s to keep from melting things. Just ask any of the drag racers and sled pullers. And before you throw Bank’s name in the mix for clean high horsepower diesels, you should know his drag trucks didnt run straight #2 diesel. ;)

I wasn't going to mention him. Your right at a point it will get dirty again. My normal application is on highway. But off road that gets different. Your right, but at that point water and methanol injection plays a big part.

    Your still thinking backwards .

Advancing injection timing helps clear up smoke and makes more power with better fuel mileage. . It also lowers EGTs and overall boost.

Retarded timing makes more EGTs less power and lower fuel mileage, but produces more boost.

You are correct on some of your knowledge but your still not grasping advanced and or retarded inj timing and its effects.

In race applications you skip the water/meth and go to nitrous. I helped work on a 5.9 dodge that was braking into the low 10’s in the early to mid 2000’s. 120+psi of boost, mechanical pumps, double digit timing advance, low teen:1 compression, 4,000+ rpm. Fun times. Lol

Getting a properly tuned VGT or properly mapped twins with flow matched injectors would be key to clean/ big power on-road. Trouble is, 99% of "tuners" fall short of producing quality work.

Maybe I missed something, did anyone answer the question. What causes the white smoke, on start up, with low nox? Retarded Timing? The EPA specifically talks about “ white smoke” with 2000 & 2001 engines. And made Detroit fix a certain number, but not all. Around 2500, I believe. Reading through the Settlements is very confusing. They also mention 2007 engines. They do mention, it’s due to ecm programming. I don’t think we need worry, the EPA is all over this thing! Lol

Nitro is not known to lower cylinder temps. It lower intake air temps inducing a denser O2 mixture into the cylinder. Causing a larger explosion. In turn it raises cylinder temps and pressure.

Water/meth direct injection purpose to lower cylinder temps so higher levels of fuel can be used safer. As we all know water does not compress and causes a rise in compression. Lowing temps. But your purposely adding more fuel and increases cylinder temp. As a result of the fuel, not water.

    Cause and effect to everything.

Btw when you run Nitro Oxygen you pull timing out, not advance it. Spraying the bottle late on TDC, or after is called a nitrous backfire. Normally results in picking up your hood, intake and turbos from the track.

Not to throw a wrench in the low nox tuning balls. My truck that started this nonsense had 2 different ecms tried. Neither touched by Detroit.

now if they happen to have low nox flash in them. Can someone good with tuning figure that out and fix the issue? If so I’m willing to get dct and let someone see if for some odd reason my truck has low nox tuning in it. It hasn’t gone in for the new piston kit yet.

I don’t know exactly what they do. But it has to do with retarding timing, I think it’s 5%. Pistons are the same.
