Where do you live flyswatter?
-
You also need the cam gear removal/holding tool
-
I live in Georgia.
-
You must check liner protrusion it has to be between .000-.003 and no more than .002 between cylinders.
-
I live in maryland if you lived closer I could adjust your valves.
FlySwatter Thanks this. -
I wish, the guy at Freightliner said $650. I will have to shop around. WW Williams probably charges a grand. I will find someone tomorrow. Thanks.
-
650 for overhead? WOW. We usually charge about 300-350 plus the gasket (40).

You will need a cam gear holder, and a cam gear puller. A very large torque wrench. I used a 650ft lbs. head bolts are torqued to 220. Also an injector height gauge. The head bolts are not reusable, neither the cam gear bolt. special tools were bought at APEX tools, and a 650 ft lb neico torque wrench out of LA it was cheap $350. Drain coolant. disassemble fuel line to back of head from filters, and blow fuel back into tank. You will need a way to re-prime the head with fuel. I used an electric fuel pump from Harbor freight. Disassemble and replace the "o" ring at the back of the head check valve, Advance Auto, it's tiny. Replace the coppers for injectors. Check color at top of injector coppers, "no Soot". Have found Detroit selling "reman" injectors with pitted seats causing blow-by into fuel galley. There is 4 tiny bolts behind the cam gear holding the cam plate to the #1 cam cap. You will need a deep well socket that will fit over the stud for jake mount on # 1,6 they have another nut added when reassembled. I drilled a socket out. must be deep enough to reach bottom nut. reuse cam bearings if not into copper, flip them. might as well replace valve seals, they are cheap. $39 valve spring compressor at sears, large C clamp style. install tool on spring and give a tap with dead blow, they will be locked on. Can do it with one hand after tapping, other wise you will break tool, it's flimsy.

You are wasting your time, if you do not get your liner height up to the high side of the spec. The reason that your head gasket blew, is because Detroit runs the liners too low. If it happened once, I guarantee you, that it WILL happen again if you do not correct the liner height. (And much sooner than the first time.) I cut them for stainless steel shims. If the counterbores are cracked, I bore & install counterbore inserts.
