Ok so here goes
Started wanting a hood truck but after a year of listening to Kevin Rutherford's= Lets Truck radio show and 135 podcasts on itunes I am done with that hood idea and going to a pre egr aero truck but i still need input..
I have for now, decided on 99-03 Volvo 770 and the Volvo because of the workstation table/ sleeper space/storage (my wife will be running with me so it was a toss up between the century and volvo but i think more room is better)... anyway
I have found multiple 770's with n14's and detroits usually they have had recent inframes and other stuff ie turbo, radiator charge air etc etc..
Will I be able to get as good of MPG on a N14 as with a detroit with the same mods (ie: pp muffler, fleet a/f , lrr tires, ops, blah blah.
I know each engine is based on previous care taken with it, but in general are there really any "pros and cons" to either one?
Also the one I am currnetly looking into has a N14 ESP ?? and in all of my searching all i kind find out is that the ESP climbs hills better?? is that just an ECM setting??
examples: 03 770 had 50k on inframe ,very clean, etc etc sold in a few days for 12k
the one I am looking at is a 2000 770 N14 ESP very clean, 200 k on inframe , he has all paperwork for repairs from the last 6 years, changes oil every 10k, a/f every 6 months, owner will run ecm, agreed to dyno and oil analysis, new virgin tires (not good rr but tradable for some Michilins or s/s), also has new radiator ,extra parts , dual exhaust his price is around 13k.................still have to do a rigdig though
So it all sounds and looks good but will MPG vs a series 60 going to offset my good deal by costing me an extra 5k ? a year in average MPG. Running Landstar 48 state and Canada.. ive heard and read n14's usually only get about 6 to 6.5 Tho my cousin has a 00 century n14 black top and he says he gets 7.3 with no mods)
Ive filtered My gauges trucks but still inclunclusive..
Wow that seemed like a long question
detroit vs n14 vs mpg's

It really depends a lot on the set up. The det 60series was very consistant with fuel mileage. I had a 98 Int'l with a 525hp N14 with a 18 spd and 3.336 rears. Best set up Ive ever had. I got 6.8mpg consistantly and it was the best pulling engine Ive ever driven. Only repair I ever did was injectors. Had Celedon not killed that truck for me Id still be driving it. The N14 pulled better than the Detroit. But too be honest you are set either way, both were great engines, but Iam biased to lean twards the N14, I never got out pulled regardless of weight.

I agree that both are solid engine choices. The N-14 is great. The Detroit is great. Each can be taken to good potential. The N-14 probably just edges out out the Detroit in low end grunt. 14L and a longer stroke make for a good torque machine. But done right, and depending on who is driving it, they would be a close match. I have gotten great mpg's from both, but think the Detroit, will generally edge out the N-14 on mpgs. Nonetheless, either choice is a good one.

We have never had a 12.7 Detroit in our fleet so I don't have any first hand knowledge but we did have a '96 N14 and the fuel mileage was nothing to write home about. Not terrible, but not great either. OTOH, from what I hear.....a pre EGR 12.7 L will run all day on a gallon of fuel and give you change.southbaydad Thanks this. -
[miQUOTE=rank;3165674]I doubt it.

It really depends on the set up. If you had a tall gear and a 10spd it will get less than a detroit. Also how you drive it makes a difference like on any engine. If you ease the throttle instead of stomping the pedal everytime you accelerate it doesnt matter what engine, also idleing plays a big part. N14's do not like to idle. I currently have an 07'Pete 387 with a 475 cat 18spd and 3.25 rear. I average 7.1mpg at 65-70mph. Most people dont break 6 with that engine. I set it up right and use an apu to avoid idle. Be smart in choosing not just the engine, but the rears and transmission.southbaydad Thanks this. -
I'd put my n-14 against any engine for fuel mileage, and unless someone has been into the ecm or put a power box on a detroit it won't come close on a long pull to the n-14. The N-14 is a simple engine to work on and relatively cheap

I average 6.8 in a 08 Columbia with a Detroit 60

what do you pull and where do you drive

I stay primarily on I-10 from Phx to TX and back with dry freight.
