I was getting 6.25 runnin across pa with a dry van for the month that I lasted hauling freight that cheap. Got 5.75 runnin to NYC and the east coast from eastern ohio with my flat with 40k + goin east and 70 k on the deck back to ohio. Got 7-7.25 haulin steel from ohio to in and il and now I get 6.25-6.4 pullin my hopper around ohio and the occasional trip to the carolinas. Hopper is taller than my bunk and can't get it close enough to the back of the bunk to help aerodynamics

I have an n14 and a 12.7 60 series.. Identical trucks.. N14 hands down.. better pulling and equal to better mpg.. Everyone says oh.. what engine what engine.. The transmission rear ends and other things are just as important.. I have a cat with twin turbos we get 6.6 out of.. So set up set up set up.. the n14 pulls better on long pulls.
-
good info- as far as engine engine engine to me that is more important cuz gearing can be changed and i think 10/13 speeds can be set up accordingly. the truck I am looking at is a 13 sp with 3:42's
I know from the posts that the n14 does have better pulling power and it seems that both engines are fairly the same - as far as reliablility ,cost of parts, and easiness to work on.
As in my original post does anyone know what the n14 ESP engine is ?? All i can seem to find out is that they pull better on the hills --- is that jsut an ecm setting or is something different in the engine itself Engine says ESP on it -
Im not sure what the letters mean. Mine was a 525E.

Personally i would stay away from the volvo to much junk to go wrong, do like pound puppy get a old cat thats been inframed all the way ,it will pull that detroit backwards thru a key hole the n14 is a much better engine down the road than the detroit, but in the long haul the cat hands down, Had um all the cat out pulls them all last one was a 475 13 spd got 7mpg w/80 on both runs .

There was a thread in the garage section of the forum where someone explained what the difference was with an esp, but for the life of me don't remember what it was or what thread it was in. Did you try a search on this site for just esp, or n14 esp?

Heavyd answered your question in the garage.

ya i read that post - that was actually to my post (if i remember right) - i just needed more info like if the esp was an option on all n14 or just thecelect and celect plus , I think i got most of the info i was looking for -- i am waiting now to get the engine serial # to try and put it thru the cummins site. The guy also replaced the ecm but i dont know if it was from same ESP type engine or not, I am going run an ecm report on it to try and get more info. Only other problem it seems to have is that the owner said he cant get the ABS brake light to go off, not sure if thats related to his ECM repl. or not - probably not tho since the ecm was replaced 6 years ago -
I was a real detroit fan. For years I always had better mpg out the detroit, until i drove a 06 isx(egr) 10 speed eaton fuller. Man, this cummins get a low 6.8 mpg headed south with a north wind and 44k. same weight, going with the wind, 7.3mpg. Before now, u couldn't tell me cummins was the best choice. BUT now, I say detroit don't come close to cummins. Just my experience.
But then again, I'm in a kenworth t2000 doing 63mph governed just like the big companies. 7.7 mpg going against the wind with 30k. I couldve made 7.9, but I got so happy I stopped to get some more lucas and then again to wash clothes with my savings.biggrin_255: seriously...)
Congrats on your decision to drop that "Big Hood" idea doesnt make financial sense too me. This work well for me, Good Luck to you. -
Have detroit 14l ..average 7
