When you get done with eating and showering, and generally relaxing, go out and jog two or three times around the truck stop/terminal...you will be so over heated and tired, you won't notice the 135 degrees inside the sleeper! -

OK, got a lot to cover. The load I T-called in Jonestown was 311 miles. When I got there, they had me do a drug test (my first ever random with Swift). Then they sent me to Chester, PA to get a load (live load) going to Rotterdam, NY (pd miles- 346). That load was a drop at the final.
[A side note: if you ever pickup at Kimberly Clark in Chester, you are allowed to sleep on the street outside the plant, but beware the beggars. They will wake you up- they don't care.]
I guess they didn't have enough drivers in the midwest because they had me deadhead from Rotterdam to Plainfield, IN to get a load on Monday. That was a live load which dropped in Monroe, MI (pd miles 1028 ) on Tuesday. Then I did a quickie local from Perrysburg, OH to Willard OH (pd miles- 101) It was a Pepperidge Farms plant in Willard that I delivered to and it sure did smell good! Almost as good as Kellogg
Anyway, I then went to the terminal in Columbus to get a trailer which delivered in Elizabeth, NJ last night (pd miles- 600). I'm now at the drop yard in Avenel. They had me scheduled to do a local today, but it was cancelled overnight. So now I'm waiting for another load, but I've had to turn down everything they've sent me because my 70 is very low. I've only got 3 hours available today. Can't do much with that.NDBADLANDS, Rattlebunny, JustSonny and 1 other person Thank this. -
1nonly,
I'll just ask my question here since I can't send a PM or post a 'visitor message'.
Anyhow, I've been driving a truck for 5 years. Not full time and only locally, in the state of Kansas. I currently work for the county I live in. Primarily run the truck hauling equipment and some tanker and flat bed work. Prior I ran a crane and drove a truck for a guy. Just pretty much flatbed/equipment hauling.
I've always wanted to drive a truck full time. I love being in one. My wife finally understands how much it would mean to me. I thought I had a chance(maybe still do) to get on with a company that has terminal here in Hutch. Dahlsten, pulling a pneumatic. But the OTR experience hurt me on the last round of hires they had.
ANYHOW, the reason for my post is about gaining OTR experience. I've contacted quite a few smaller trucking companies but without actual OTR (state to state) they chose someone who does. In your opinion, would attempting to get on with Swift be possible? Or a good idea? I can drive/operate anything. There's no load I couldn't pull, as I've pulled a lot of heavy ### equipment all around Kansas. Permitted more than not. But I read these horror stories about Swift and JB Hunt etc... and it honestly makes me leery.
I'm just looking of honest opinion and answers as I'm trying to decide what to do.
Thanks in advance. -
Most companies will require you to take a refresher course I bet. Would be a few thousand bucks.

Finally got a load out of New Jersey I could actually do, after turning down 4 preplans. I picked up a trailer at the Avenel drop yard and took it to Waynesburg, OH the next afternoon (pd miles- 448). It turned out to be a load of asbestos going to a landfill. It was pretty cool how they unloaded it- I dropped the trailer and they had a big bulldozer with a fifth wheel attachment on the end of an arm. They hooked that bulldozer to the trailer and lifted up the nose so all the garbage dropped out the other end. Then I hooked back up to the trailer and left. Simple as that! It's neat to see how they do things sometimes.
I'm currently on a load I picked up in Warrendale, PA yesterday and delivers in Livonia, MI tomorrow (pd miles- 347). So I'm taking a 34hr restart in New Boston today. I have a hometime request in for here on the 28th, but they're a bit too early. I'll just ask if they can run me local for a couple days, or maybe get me a round trip Home Depot load out of Monroe.Rattlebunny and alex94 Thank this. -
Raiderfanatic, Swift wouldbe a good choice if you want to drive OTR...There's all kinds of frustraded people out there with all starter companies...Werner has lots of ticked off drivers,so does Swift...JB...GTI...etc...like 1nonly said, it depends on ur looking for and ur attitude. If u keep an open mind, you'll be fine.I'm going back on the road and chose Swift because they have freight and lots of choices if I want to go dedicated down the road. Some companies are hurting still and Swift is so big that there's a better chance to stay busy then smaller co's...I've ran into swift drivers and most are very happy..there are some that nothing will ever make them happy....just my .02.......
JustSonny Thanks this. -
Thanks for the honest answers.

This is a very interesting thread. Lately I've been talking to Swift drivers and they seem pleased and committed to their job.
I drive for Roehl and love it. But I must say I have a new respect for Swift. The equipment I've seen is fairly new and in good shape and the drivers speak well of the company and seem to have few or no complaints. Thanks 1nonly for the thread and very interesting.
IF I ever had to move companies, I'd consider Swift now for sure.JustSonny, Rattlebunny, 1nonly and 1 other person Thank this.
