I was to have started school this morning. Obviously not there. I have a history of high blood pressure and wanted to get it checked. I went on Friday and it was high. I got some meds and its better but still high. I figure cut out coffee, exercise, watch diet, go back for follow up tomorrow, maybe get an additional med and start next Monday. My wife says that I wasted the week by not starting today.....but if I cant pass the DOT physical then why go? Im healthy other than the BP. So, did I do the right thing?

This depends on what you mean by high blood pressure. Are you on meds to control it on a regular basis? If not then i have seen drivers end up with a 1 year or 6 month med card.
-
Yes, you wasted a week.
As long as you can control your BP with meds. You can drive. Your medical card will be limited to 1 year. But there are many drivers out here doing just what you're trying to do.....drive. -
I have high bp and it never even slowed me down. Sounds a little like you found a way out and are going to take it. If you want something bad enough nothing stands in the way. Jus sain

If you're not just finding excuses after changing your mind, then yes you did the right thing. Depending on how high the BP was it is better to spend a few days getting it straightened out before going and taking your physical.

High blood pressure, also know as "The Silent Killer" if untreated can and will cause death. Not to mention premature organ failure, adult diabetes, and stroke. Your numbers are "a little high"? Get it treated. Taking meds for a few days? Wrong. It usually takes 1-2 months for the meds to get high blood pressure under control, and with that some tweaking by the doctor. I speak out of knowledge. I saw my old man fight high blood pressure my whole life. It eventually killed him ten years ago. Eight years ago I was in your same position. I did everything the doctor said, meds, diet and exercise. I'm happy to say that after eight years I have been given a two year medical card four straight times. Take care of your situation, believe me when I say this, the trucking industry will still be here when you get back, it also will still be here if you should check out because of "The Silent Killer." -
Well one for sure if you don't take care of it now its only going to get worse when your out on the road.
Multiply your stress times 10, subtract your exercise by 99%, then multiply your eating out again times 7, add 8 cups of coffee to your normal daily intake and see what you come up with!
If you believe you weren't quite ready then so be it. Worrying about it is only going to make that much worse.JohnBoy and CondoCruiser Thank this. -

Just curious, have you been taking meds for it all along or has it been "untreated"? Problem with newly diagnosed high BP is you need to "experiment" with meds to see which one (s) work best for you. I've had it for years, but it's under control with meds, however, at first I had to change the meds a couple times because of side effects. I think you made the right decision to get it under control now before school etc. Normally, the meds take effect in a few days, but not always.

Yep, it took over a year to get my meds right and get it down. I'm now 110/70, a fine tuned athelete!
Doctors usually want a couple months to see what it's doing before making changes.
