I have a bc880 with a ms500 amp. The radio recieve's and sends perfectly without the amp on. With it on It sounds like junk and people's voices are very quiet and I have no static ever! RF gain does nothing with amp on. Can even hear less distance when amp is on.

Do I have a bad cable? ANT test shows good and its still in tune. I just hope i didnt wreck a $300 amp

It has to be your settings on the amp. Try turning off the Pre or something or turning off the side band switch.

Sounds like your not matched properly, and the oscillations from overheating ate the keying transistor. This causes the keying relay to stay energized as soon as you turn it on. Total disconnect from radio to antenna. Probably the most common failure in the Texas Star line and no doubt your failure was similar. Replace the keying transistor and quit over driving it or next it will be the finals going.

Actually it is what you are saying by reading your beginning post. Moot point. Until you fix the amp and post real numbers all anyone can do is post likely explanations and plausible theories.

    What is the radio DKing?

Most Amps don't like allot of DK out of the radio....I usually have my radios DK set at around 2w's and let them swing from there, and seldom have issues with the Amps.

Should be 4w's. I asked people about what radios would allow a few extra watts and they suggested a ms250 or 500 and another amp. So I guess they were wrong?

My experience, even with the so called "high drive" amps is you want to low drive them. I would say you have found out what 4 watts into your amp will do for you! Did you run it on high? I've always ran a amp on the low setting. The harder you drive it the hotter it gets and the sooner it dies. I have ran Texas Star 350 HD, 667V, and few other odd ball ones and now a KL 300.....never had a problem with any of them using the above mentioned methods.....i.e. low watts in and on the lower setting on the amp.....except for the occasional very brief periods on high with everything cranked wide open.
