Occasional lags ??? I can only wish !! Everything I do has lag. Vista was slow...but not this slow.

I often wonder whether I'm trying to push a golf ball through a garden hose when I click an icon.

For all it's so called slow loading bells and whistles....Vista WAS faster. For me, anyway.

XP and Vista phone home every 14 days unless you disable WGA. (windows genuine advantage)

    http://www.seattlepi.com/business/275780_msftsuit29.html

WGA was a little surprise inserted into Windows XP service pack 2 about 7 years ago. At first, it "phoned home" at every boot up. When people complained, they pulled it back to once every 14 days. It's simple enough to remove, if you do a search for "remove wga" you'll find a utility on all the major shareware sites that removes the feature from XP and Vista. But this has been going on for years.

Like the previous poster, I'm using Ubuntu for my primary OS. My computer came loaded with Vista. I just purchased and installed
XP on a partition, so I can use it for the stubborn commercial Windows games that I have that won't run in Ubuntu, although a lot of Windows games in fact will. I have no anti-virus, no anti-spyware stuff on my system..I simply don't need it.

Windows 7 is very fast for me. However, my laptop came with it, and the specs are very overkill for what I do (even though i only paid $350 for the machine).

Windows 7 is a resource hog and it goes without saying just from the makers track record.

Again...I'll state the same thing. This IS NOT a privacy issue, as was the concern of the XP sp2.

This is a "disabling" issue. While the XP did phone home. It never asked anyone for a credit card if someone at MS "thought" you had a bootleg copy. Although it could show a nag screen, and force a roll back to a previous state.

    NOW.....

MS has allowed itself too much leeway in defining what a pirated/illegal copy of their OS is. And has the potential of crippling 1000's of legal machines.

The update can be uninstalled, unless you get hit with the nag screen asking you to purchase a legal copy. Then...it's too late.

What it all equates to... MicroSoft has the ability and authority to disable ANY PC that it wishes in the future. If this update is installed.

My concerns.... with the new "internet" authority being requested by the White House. What stops the Fed from contacting MS, and requesting a nation or world wide crippling shot be fired across our bow ??

Of course it won't affect me...I didn't take the update. Nor will it effect the 1000's of illegal machines around the world.

I run XP on my home unit and surf with FireFox. I LIKE IT!

I have somewhere around here several Linux disks. Think I'll try one or more in this goofy Laptop I have....

HUH. Dell proprietary stuff. Linux disks won't boot it.

Gotta get a USB Wireless adapter and a power brick to run it in a truck.
