C'mon now.....I doubt he did serious damage . I was in Pete today and they were advertising a complete clean out of the exhaust for like 2 grand. You hook a yellow pole and blow 4 tires and bend rims plus knock axles out of line and you're way past that so...... I'm sure it's happened before too.
I just haven't figured out how he did it though....... the hole is smaller and the DEF won't pump til you hang up the diesel and push the DEF button........even if he pulled the insert out...there's no diesel...at least at the J......
But don't feel bad op.... my junk broke down and they threw me in a Volvo....... I couldn't figure out how to open the hood ( no latches ) and had to ask another Volvo driver how.......after 30 odd years I can't get a hood open !! Sure felt like a rookie on that one.......
Diesel in DEF tank

When I was at Carroll Fulmer, there was, evidentially, some drivers that did the same thing you did. They posted the pics of all the messed up parts. Unfortunately, you have just created the DEF comedy jam in your engine, ONLY, none of it is funny. Why didn't your company try to warn you, at least, about that! Sorry to hear that for you.

But the screen says pump diesel, and from all the places I have fueled. You have to get diesel and def, and the dum TA makes you Get Tractor and reefer, Then you have to back your truck up to get Def. Now the other places will let you get tractor first. You hang up pump. Says to fuel def, You hang that up after fueling it says you can fuel reefer. I really don't know how your company is going to buy this story. If you didn't call the company and ask them what to do. Unless you left it out of the story. It seems like you thought you might get away with it. So you didn't tell company nothing until it was 2 late. Now if the company told you to drive it like that then you probably won't get in much trouble. But if you tried to hide it and now you have voided a warranty on a motor. You might want to have your bags packed. Only you know what happened, but like most of these threads you guys leave out the important parts.

Dinomite, here's the way I've interpreted him. And I'm assuming this happened because he's a reefer hauler.
He setup his pump, it asked if he wanted DEF. He hit yes. Put in truck and trailer for fuel.
Then, pumped fuel into his tractor fuel tank. Pulled forward to be in line for DEF. Since he was at a pump that has a DEF button on it, he just assumed DEF comes out of the fuel hose. He caught the mistake when he realized the price wasn't matching what DEF costs (usually $2.95 or less, and diesel was much higher). So, that's why he only got a gallon in there.
More than likely, the only way it could've happened if is he a) pulls a reefer and the pump was actually thinking he was about to pump his reefer or b) he reset up the transaction again. No way could it have read 1 gallon pumped unless the transaction was starting over (either by him, or by the pump thinking it's reefer).
Either way, he screwed up. Why? Because he wasn't properly trained on how to fuel DEF. And to top it off, he compounded the problem by then driving 500 miles because he thought 'maybe it wouldn't hurt anything'. Which, based on the de-rate, and my limited knowledge of how DEF works, the system shut down to protect it when it sensed the DEF wasn't pure. Either because it pumped it through the system, or because the tank sensed the mixture being off.
Either way, at best they have to drain the tank and put fresh in. At worse, they have to clean the whole system and hope nothing was damaged.
One thing with trucking: DO NOT just think you can drive away your problems. Be a man. Realize you dun screwed up, and get it fixed before it turns into a huge problem. If you put coolant in your oil by mistake, would you have just 'drove 500 miles' hoping it wasn't going to hurt anything? -
I never mentioned DEF in fuel tanks.

Do you notice how he wont answer the question about DRIVING 500 MILES with or without Company permission?
-
Derailed, pattyj and skyviper73 Thank this.

Can you post where he said he notified the company before he drove the 500 miles? I did see where he notified the fuel attendant, but I guess I missed where he called the company and they told him to mash the motor. Not trying to ride the guy, but I can't help but notice how he is skipping over certain questions. Maybe he wasn't trained by the company to notify them of little incidents like that either.

Not avoiding anything. The driving is my mistake.
Petro's diagnostics machine is down, going to a TA in the morning (out of hours). Will update then.
wonderdog24 and Dinomite Thank this. -

b : failure to exercise the care that a reasonably prudent person would exercise in like circumstances
2

Hmmmm Am I just being picky or do I see people who like to use the word mistake a lot or is it the same thing.
Pumping diesel into a def tank- Mistake
Driving truck 500 miles till it goes bang without notifying company of your mistake- Negligence.
Can somebody tell me if I'm on the right track. Not trying to be a hard tail, but trying to figure out if these two words are the same thing?
