Being a mechanic or being mechanically inclined with a a fearless to fix it and get it done attitude makes better productivity of the truck and you as a driver. You will treat the equipment better and with more respect and be more in tune with it. You will be on top of things long before they become problems and can fix them with way less downtime in majority of cases.

And you won’t sit burning a clock because you have to sit and wait for someone to change a lightbulb or headlight or some other stupid little thing you found broke during a pre trip cause your too afraid to do it like I see with most new gen drivers everyday. Lol!

If u are gonna run ur own operation id say having that mechanical know how is the best tool in the toolbox.. If you are going to be a company driver, id say save yourself the frustration... Especially when the company wants to send the truck to the dealer for a week to replace a light

5 -6 years ago We had a driver that showed up at the warehouse at 6am to get in his truck and go do his daily route. Problem was someone “borrowed” the batteries out of it that night. You know because the truck looked “abandoned” from sitting in same spot for 10 hrs.
Well he was calling me to tell me he didn't know what to do and never changed a battery in his life and that we needed to call AAA or a tow truck to take it to a shop and he would just take the day off if need be. He drives a pickup and has a company credit card. I told him go to the diesel shop down the rd. That opens up at 7am and buy some freakin batteries and when I get there I will help you put them in so you can go make some dang money.
