Could someone who is familar with both Practical mileage pay and house hold mileage explain the difference please. Roehl pays PMP while most other companies pay HHG. I would like a better understanding of these payscales and how they work. What are the pros and cons???

You get paid more miles with practical mileage. HHG miles are from the center of the city. If your delivery is 10miles to the east of the center of the the city then you would not get paid those 10 miles.

All true. You can think of it this way... HHG miles are a way of rating each load you pull, and assigning a monetary value to it. Companies that use practical miles (from what I've heard - no experience here) are totally down on you using the vehicle for anything but moving the load from shipper to receiver - that's because they're paying you for an exact number of odometer measured miles. My company uses HHG - if you go out of route a few miles to get to WalMart for a fridge restocking run, it's no big deal. Right now, with freight down and the rates depressed because of the economy, I really don't think it matters much which way you get paid by.

hhg is paid zip code to zip cod . so i f you are on the far side of dallass , tx and have to go to ft worth , tx abou 45 miles or so you get paid 1 mile cause you only change zip codes once.....i had plenty of experiance with this one cause my old company is in dallass , tx ....

For OTR I don't really think it makes much of a difference. If you're doing a run across Dallas on a regular basis, you'd be better off being paid hourly - especially in that traffic!

I was looking at roehls payscale and it said pratical. I know Swift goes by HHG. Who else goes by HHG? For a newbie or greenhorn driver, which is better?

Maybe I'm wrong but aren't 'practical miles' just like HHG but a little more accurate? Both are predetermined and not based on the odometer like hub miles would be.

Neither - what's more important is your starting cents-per-mile, and how that progresses over time. HHG vs practical is a non-issue, promoted by companies trying to attract more talent than other companies.

According to the companies that promote this, it's based on actual miles driven - but if that's the way they're paying, you can be sure that they are going to be pissed if you take a little side trip to WalMart if it's more than just beside the exit from the big road.

:biggrin_25526:Most companies are using some computer software now, which shorts the driver about 5-7%. It's the nature of the beast. HHG/Practical is a ripoff. You'll find that you do a lot of work for free in this biz. Reefer drivers get to spend a couple hours getting a wash out, of which they are not paid a dime. Whenever you do a "favor" for dispatch, it'll be a freebie. Even today, in 2009, If you are running through Laughlin, Nv going in or out of Las Vegas because of the Hoover Dam restriction, you are being paid mileage as if you were going over the Dam. The extra 23 miles going through Laughlin is on you. My last company always said, "Hey, it's the computer, we're trying to fix it". Going through Atlanta is the same. You're paid going direct, but you have to use the bypass. Can you say "Rip me off" ?

Companies using Quallcom, can force a route change to make up the difference, (using the Laughlin vs Dam scenario), Swift in the winter would let us go over to US 95 from Bishop to get from Fontana to Reno, instead of staying on US 395, driver manager would show the route change in the routing and we got paid the miles difference. Same with Vegas to Phoenix when they closed the Dam, but, you had to get ahold of your DM and get the change done. They still don't advertise the fact you have to let someone know you are doing it..
