I'm a guy from a different industry wondering about Trucking industry. Few questions for O/O guys:
1- Does the broker guarantee you a load? E.g. take this load from Miami,FL to Chicago,IL geIL I'llt you a load bringing you home within 2-4 days.
2- My assumption is that rate get higher around holidays season. Is that accurate?
3- My assumption (again) is,a load from Miami,FL to Madison,WI is probably better than another from Miami,FL to Bismarck,ND. Even that the first one is 700 miles longer , but probably you wouldn't find a load back. Is that accurate?
4- if (2&3) are accurate, then why do you have constant rate regardless source/destination? Link below
Spot market gets mixed results at month's end
Drive safe
Thanks

Ridgeline,
Thanks for quick straight forward reply.
Would you please elaborate on :
"4 - much of the work is not from load boards or brokers."?
Thanks -
no no and Varies on load. you cannot be fixed on one route or even dedicated... and especially no extra on holidays, other way around. After Halloween the entire USA takes a holiday until second week of Jan. You can feel the big sucking sound as the freight goes away.
BTW, 700 miles aint nothing. It's a trip down the street.Western flyer, Träger and FlaSwampRat Thank this. -
Isn't that going to lead to long wait time in ND in such case? Or driving 200-300 miles to the closest load? -
Some customers do not wait at all. For me in my time back then it's medicines out, bales reloaded and on way back to shipper in less than a hour.
The money takes care of itself as long you know your exact break even per mile cost and make more than that your business will thrive until the next breakdown.
You will want 6 months to a year reserve constantly added to every month.Träger and FlaSwampRat Thank this. -
FlaSwampRat, Träger and Diesel Dave Thank this.

Seems I'm wrong. So, what should I worry about?
Appreciate the advice.

Assuming all is flat 7 mpg and so on . 3.00 gallon.
It's about a 29 gallon move. 85 or so dollars into your pocket. Thats nickels and dimes. You would invest in that move for example to pick up a load at a shipper.FlaSwampRat and Träger Thank this. -
Appreciate the insight.
