I wanted to know what I would need to do to get differential wheel lock added to my truck. It has the differential lock that locks the axles together but I seen you could add a lock to the axle itself too. Has anyone done this? What would I need?

I added a full locker to mine this spring. $2,300 for a rebuilt diff head, $200 for a new axle, plus labor. You need to make sure the new head will fit in the housing. It may need to be notched.

Thanks, Ill look into it. I had to back into a field across a little ditch the other day and could have used it.

Hi guys. I'm new to dump trucking. I just started a new job two weeks ago driving a tri axle Sterling dump truck. The second day on the job I pulled an axle out. The truck has a 300 hp cat; way under powed for this app. The trans is a 8ll rto. the diffs are 4\11 ratio. The boss just through me the keys and said go to work.
I'm working in wet clay the kind you could roll up in you hand. I also some times have to climb steep grades. I have been putting both locks in and pulling away in first or second in deep reduction. (not the low low gear). The problem I'm having is sometime I can pull away in second but the motor almost dies. If I pull away in first I'm just crawling. If I try to shift from first to second the truck just stops because of the slow speed and heavy weight in the muck. I travel about 1000 feet before I reach the pavement and I don't see other truckers with the same problem although the do have better equipment. eg mack kw. I could use some advise with this and having the locks on the diff engage will this help prevent twisting anouther axle.
I don't really understand the mechanics of the wheel lock; when its engaged are all four axles doing the work and when it disengaged are only one axle on one side of the diff doing the work. Also can I dissingage the lock under full power; here again if I let off powed i'm stoped again. Some times I also have to climb a steep hill out of the pit on a sharp curve an I can feel the axles grabing because the truck wants to go straint. I could really use some help with these issues because if I pull anouthe axle out I'm done. Thanks in advance DoogerLast edited: Oct 30, 2011

Leave the locks on when it's steep and soft etc. You won't hurt them. If you have to turn a tight corner unlock the front and leave the rear locked up.

There are central diff lock and axe locks. usually volvo install central diff lock on 6x4 trucks and axe diff lock on 4x2 and 6x2 trucks but the best solution is combiantion of central lock and axe lockes, but volvo offer it on construction vehicles like Volvo FMX and VHD, usually with hub reduction axels.
why? the unswer is simple with all rear axes locked and with central diff locked truck is unsteerable.
