Hello to everyone! I have been lurking on these boards for some time. I took a small vacation from the forums as I became swept away with doing well in college and working my behind off to make ends' meet.
More to the point: I have been looking into driving for years. When I first wanted to truly pursue this avenue, I had a very ill relative that suddenly needed care, her subsequent passing, and dashing between places to live after a short family battle during probate.
Several years after that, I am nearly finished in college (with only three months to go!) and I realize that, in the area I am in, I cannot find a decent job in my field.
Seeing as I have always loved the idea of trucking, coming from a family of truckers, having friends as truckers, I would like to pursue this course once more.
I have tried to contact Schneider first. I realize many of you will have bad things to say about them, but hey, everyone needs to start somewhere and, as a broke college student, the idea of free school is certainly appealing.
However, I cannot seem to get in touch with a live person.
More in curiosity than choice, I tried to contact Swift second. I call, I hear a click, and I hear an automated message tell me that their office was closed and to go to their website. Click.
So, those of you who are relatively new or recent grads - How hard was it to get an actual person on the line?
This is more of a first-time, blog post, but I wanted to introduce myself, give a background, and make you all privy to my situation.
Good to be here and thanks for all of the information thus far!

No, I am finishing college because I have had my run of it. I am not finishing college simply to drive truck.
I was following the path my life was taking me at the time and it's run it's course. Time for something new. -
Unsolicited advice: Good for you for finishing college. It may not look like there are jobs now but the degree could still open up doors for you later in life. You can always drive a truck in the mean time. But finishing what you start is almost always a good thing. It took me a while to learn that!

Hard to think you cant get hold of Schneider, what# did you call? College doesnt guarantee anyone a job these days so if you can handle the lifestyle and be away from home and family then go for it. i'm sure others will disagree but i think Schneider would be an excellent starting point if they accept you. good luck in your career choice, i know plenty of jobless college grads.
ronin Thanks this. -
Sorry I have no info on getting to talk with a real person when looking for free schooling. I had plenty of calls from the starter companies after they knew I was already in a trucking school. If you can scrape together cash for that, it might open some doors.

Most degrees don't mean squat right now, like flguy said it will always help in opening doors but you know how many unemployed grads are out there? Follow your heart. If you want to be a trucker go for it, make the change from wannabe to student. Keep us posted and good luck!
ronin Thanks this. -
I agree Schneider will definitely teach you how to drive as long as your open minded and can follow basic instruction. Their enrollment process is a bit detailed however the time that the instructors will take to make sure you have it is priceless. The only gripe I had with them was after training in correopolis, pa when I returned to gary, In I was unable to get a trainer and subsequently decided not to go with them. The governed trucks are a lil annoying however got start somewhere. Otherwise I would give them a thumbs up. Good luck going forward!

Thank you all for the replies and so quick as well!
As I said, I kind of did the college thing simply because it's where I was in my life.
Being a little older and living with my lady-friend, I realize that I will not be able to use my degree for anything here. It just seems that, right now more than ever, trucking seems to be the way to go.
My biggest fear about the college aspect is that several months after I graduate, I will have to begin paying all of my loans back. Trucking seems to be a good way to pay a good chunk of that off, while trying to find where I want to settle down.
I think it may just be the times I tried to call Schneider that I cannot get anyone.
I did speak with CR England today. Clarissa seemed almost irritated that I was curious and that I had questions.
After all of the lurking and reading, I will definitely post here more often. Ask more questions about random aspects about the job and just participate.
Thanks again folks! -
I figured I would do what you said; drive truck in the mean time and do what I can when I can!
