Oh it is. When I was a GM tech when the shop got slow and we had time on our hands dumb stuff would start happening. One of them would be washer fluid bottle races. Take a bottle with just the right amount of fluid and a lighter and the race is on!

One day last week I had a similar urge.

A train went south through Salisbury, and touched off several brush fires along roughly a mile of track further down in Fruitland, the biggest of which butted up against the back yard of a place I had to deliver to.

Naturally, everybody was standing around gawking with your aforementioned recording devices in hand while what was the equivalent of a small campfire is swiftly morphing into a full blown blaze.

“Oh, let me get pictures, send it to the wife, send it to so and so....”.

“Really??? Can I get the hell out of here please??? Do that #### on your own time.”

You went thru 2 extinguishers which didn't work. So now you claim just one more would have done the trick. Are you a fire fighter? So I pull over and my truck, maybe me too, gets run into by Mr/Ms/Mrs distracted driver. So now we got a wreck at the same location as the fire. More traffic backed up and more emergency vehicles required, plus the following lawsuits. If the human occupants are safely away from the fire that's all I care about. Screw the truck, trailer and horses. Being a "hero" only goes so far.

You can be more in the way if you pull over to stop with big rig, the emergency vehicles need access and a crowd of gawkers is not needed.

I’m going to play devil’s advocate here a second. Say I stop at said fire, and sacrifice my extinguisher. It works, nothing burns to the ground, and we go on with our lives. The next day I get pulled in for a random inspection, and my extinguisher is empty. Now I have to pay for both a new extinguisher, and a violation. How many DOT cops will believe the “I just used it yesterday in another state” excuse? Is a person immediately supposed to go find a new extinguisher in some unknown town? Buy a new one at the Flying J that’s marked up 80% over every place else? I doubt asking the fire victim to reimburse me for my extinguisher is going to go over well at that moment. I guess the answer would be to get picture proof where the extinguisher was used to show the DOT gestapo, and try to get a pass. This is all just thinking out loud, so put the pitchforks down.

Matter of fact I stopped to help a farmer who’s tractor was aflame a few years ago. I was heading the opposite direction, and had to find a place to turn around on the highway to get back. By the time I got there the fire had burnt out, so I was no help. Two other people were stopped there before me as well. I was hesitant to stop anyway since I was hauling 1.1D explosives in the truck (F550 with a van body). Had two extinguishers though, and my conscience wouldn’t let me just drive away.

No need to go without a extinguisher since they can be bought nearly anywhere. Walmarts, Home Depots, truck stops, Fleetpride etc etc all have them. Worrying about their costs and subsequent reimbursements are not traits of a man performing a selfless act. Most of us who genuinely want to help someone aren't expecting to be repaid. Personally, I only expect the person who I helped to pay it forward to someone else in need. Everyone wants to complain about how far our culture has fallen yet nobody wants to be the change that is so desperately needed. It's up to each one of us to make the effort to reverse the damage done. Those who don't make an effort are part of the problem, if not the entire problem themselves.

I live in Columbia 5 mins away from that Flying J and of course its all opinion but everyone is not use to urban areas that the locals visit for the cheaper fuel plus its close to the Greyhound bus station that sees a lot of people passing thru or waiting for rides.

So I guess you would just drive by?
I don't stop to help everybody, most people are self sufficient, but a lone lady with horse trailer, clearly an empty extinguisher and flames coming out from under the trailer? Yup. I'd be a piece of #### if I didn't.
