charges me 10% of the amount of the load right off the bat. Is this fair?
BTW...I'm new to the trucking world. Just purchased my first truck and have very little knowledge about how this works. I've learned alot from a bunch of cool guys on my fishing forum so I thought I would give this a try. Thank you guys/gilrs in advance for your response. Sorry if this is in the wrong forum.

They're going to charge you something for letting you run under their authority, finding you loads, and all the other things they do. Do you run their base plates, for instance? I've seen owner operators charged anywhere from 7% to 25% of a load.
Fair is irrelevant, though. Fair doesn't even enter the equation. What does your contract say that they can charge you? If you signed on with them to haul for 20% of the load, then they could charge you 80% off the top. Whatever you signed up for is what you're going to get, fair or not fair.
Not trying to bust on you, but you bought a truck and leased it on somewhere without knowing this? Did you think a company just set up shop to help guys out who went out and bought trucks? I doubt it's a hobby for them. Of course they're going to make some money off of you.bulldozerbert and outerspacehillbilly Thank this. -
"Not trying to bust on you, but you bought a truck and leased it on somewhere without knowing this?" - A close friend owns the company. Not saying that I don't trust him but its usually the people closest to you that will f*^k you. I'm just trying to learn the business. Thanks again! -
Companies can manipulate the books very easily. Some take a % off the top and then pay you (the O/O) say, 75%-80%. You'll see companies that advertise paying 75% of 100%. That means the O/O gets 75% of 100% of the revenue. ALL O/O's shoud get 100% of the fuel sur-charge. Now some companies pay for base plates/fuel tax's/insurance. And some don't. There's a few that charge you a set fee regardless of the loads you haul and what they pay. In a perfect world, you would want for the company to pay everything and then pay you the highest percentage (on time). The O/O always pays for his insurance and fuel. One company I talked to on the West Coast paid EVERYTHING, including fuel, but then paid about 60 cents per mile to the truck.

Yeah, fuel taxes depend on how many miles you run in a particular state and how much fuel you bought there, as well. In essense, you're paying fuel tax at the pump. For instance, you fuel up in Az. coming into Ca. You get into and out of Ca. without getting fuel. So, you ran about 400 miles in Ca., right? At the end of the quarter, Ca. will want their fuel tax for the miles you ran in their state. My fuel taxes were about $150 a quarter, if I remember correctly in'07,'08. (running Ca.-Tx./Ok.).

10% for using their authority is fairly common. -
hey there,if ur an exp o/o i need to ask a few ques.i,m new to this and i wanna get rolln quik, plez contact me ASAP call me plez at 302 439 3794 my name is gary thank you

I pay my own plates, insurance, fuel tax (they file it) run my own trl and I pay 10% it's fairly common rate for when you pay most of your own stuff. Some of the companies that pay all that for you and run their trailer charge upwards of 35% or more
and it's fuel, not gas -
SO a company that will take 10% for dispatch and another 10% for running under their authority and ins. and fuel surcharge pulling their reefer is OK? I as well was approached asking that if I were to buy my own truck I would get hired on pulling reefer and sometimes a grain trailer. Not sure if I want to. Still would like to research more on this. WOuld there be a O/O guide for dummies, for me?
