I have aquestion about dispatchers..I'm sure i will be assigned one even though I won't be OTR..does anyone know what duties a dispatcher has besides keeping drivers moving?
IE: Do they usually have idle time behind the desk?
Are they provided unsupervised internet to play on the putor?

Dispatchers are purveyors of liquid sunshine. And little else.
How large the PVC pipe they insert into your lower orifice, depends on the quantity of liquid sunshine they have to offer. -
..alrighty then

A truly good dispatcher doesn't spend much time playing... For anything other than good ones, refer to Danc's post.

well my curiousity is geared more towards discussion boards like these and wonder how many or much opportunity someone in the biz such as maybe a dispatcher might have time to play and yank peoples chains on these boards..just my own curiousity given I've seen on another board where someone seems to purposely ask baited questions..maybe I have to much time to think....can't wait til monday when life is gonna hit me and get back to work..

I don't think my hubby's dispatcher nows how to just sit down and relax! He seems to have a spring in his bottom end, and every time he sits down, he thinks of some other thing he has to do, and is off to inspect a trailer, or find a set f directions for a driver or any one of a dozen other things.

Dispatchers match loads with drivers, but multiply that say 50 times and consider all the drivers that are late, calling in with the dumbest of questions, asking for home time, calls from shippers/consignees wanting to know when the load will be delivered, dealing with load planners, meetings with management, covering for sick dispatchers, etc, and I think they have little time really for games on the puter, right?
gdyupgal and Flying Dutchman Thank this. -
The dealing with customers on the phone part is huge in our industry. We deal with some of the biggest contractors and some of the simplest homeowners. Contractors somewhat understand how trucking works, getting the load, where it comes from, how long it takes, etc. Homeowners think we have aggregate/material in the world stocked somewhere at our fingertips and expect a narrower than 2 hour delivery window. It gets ridiculous sometimes.
