Hi, I am looking for some insight. My husband is an owner operator wanting to add 2 or 3 more trucks. Have 0 idea on dispatching process and really even how to get started. Is there anyone that could offer some helpful info?

    Yes, I can help...

First off..How much experience does your hubby have as an independent carrier?

Next....While I don't want to scare you but, YOU will be the deciding factor on his success If you choose to dispatch

Dispatching requires Patience, Good phone etiquette, Fair clerical/office skills and a desire to want to work with people.

im sure you have thought about this, Cause its not a job where you'll sit in a spare bedroom in your pajamas drinking coffee, smoking cigarettes calling brokers on various posted loads..If You choose that Route, You will Fail and your hubby will be out thousands of dollars

Next, What's your Niche? (A foundation on where you'll be Moving freight out of..Your outbounds)

Concentrate on sales skills...Always PRE_PLAN your trucks..ALWAYS!! Never let a single piece of equipment.go..Like you "Forgot about it"........Be courteous to the Drivers, NO MATTER WHAT happens. Basically be professional.

Next, A dispatching/planning software App for your PC's are available to keep track of where your trucks are,Keep track of your customers Needs, Dates of Pick-ups/Deliveries etc. (Years ago we used T-cards to dispatch) You really wont need that due to computer programs.

Next, Don't Lie to anyone.. Your Customers, Your Drivers, Your Hubby etc.... Even If The World seems to cave in on you some weeks.......Don't try to make a bad situation 'better' by lying. You Will Lose in the long run.

Im sure others will add to this ,But this is very good advice To start with

If you have any other questions...Feel free to ask. Good luck.
