Years ago, I worked for a reefer company that was in the same city I live in. Couldn't take the truck home whatsoever. Thing was, I took 3 days off, and came back to find someone else in my truck. The next time, I took 2 days off to see my ailing grandmother...TWO DAYS, and they gave my truck to another driver. My last company gig, I was 1300 miles away from the terminal. I took a month off. Parked the truck in the driveway.
Now, here's my rule:I WILL NOT TAKE A LOADED TRAILER TO THE HOUSE. I'm not going THROUGH the house, I am going TO the house.
You handle dispatcher bullying the same way you handled bullies in school. If I told you that I was going to be home on a certain date, you're not sending me the other way. You are not sending me through the house with a load. You'll have a company bounce you 400 miles to get a load, but when it's time to go home, 150 miles is too far to bounce? (Keep track of your longest bounce, load numbers...etc. you will need that to throw it in their face). Bang heads with a bully, and the bully will seek easier prey.

Like, "a few days, every couple weeks or months. Not every single day for years on end, never moving..."

My company lets me take the truck home after I drop the trailer at the yard which is about an hours drive from the house. But the city I live in has a commercial truck parking and noise ordinance, and no way is the truck fitting in my driveway(a least not without crushing my neighbors landscaping). So I just park it at the pilot in a nearby city with no such stupid rules.
