i originally got my cdl in wisconsin using my dads address, then he moved so i had to change my address too. tried switching to illinois, but had to retake all the tests, written pre trip and road, ended up following my dad to florida where i just had to prove residence and pay the fee. my mom lives up in illinois and thats where i'm from, grew up, all my friends are there etc. my question is am i restricted to looking at companies that only hire out of florida, or can i look at companies that hire out of illinois? just say when i do home time i want it in illinois?

you can pretty much request home time anywhere you want it, as long as the company goes in that area. no company that i am aware of will let you do home-time (with the truck) out of an area, they do not serve. you'd have to park the truck and fly, as gray dog will take up all your time. so for you, a 48 state carrier is your choice of employers.

then too, you need to ask, "how often do they go up into that area"?

if once a year, you're screwed

Illinois is the same as before and they love to fail drivers that are trying to switch cdl from another state. Many companies hire Florida drivers and can take hometime anywhere that's in their hiring area. Abilene Motor Express is one of them.

Whatever company you are most interested in you'll need to either call them or browse their website to see where their hiring areas are. Some have a hiring freeze in certain states while others hire in all 48 states.Far as hometime, you can take that anywhere you choose.
