Why not? Driving truck is ######## no matter what niche you're in. Ought to get paid enough for a middle class lifestyle.

Nobody brags about being underpaid while breaking their back anymore.

It does take a toll on your physical and mental health as you age. Money isn't everything. What good is it if you don't live long enough to see the fruits of your labor? Had an issue some years back where I developed more than one blood clot. One of those turned into a PE. When talking to the doctor, he mentioned maybe it would be wise to yank my medical card and force me to find some other kind of work. According to him and other medical professionals, I was too young to have those issues. Thankfully that's not what happened but it was a wake up call.

They’re definitely out there I got a 4 day rotating schedule and it’s a thing of beauty.. the way it falls is every 7 weeks we get 6 days off in a row 2weeks after you get 3 days in a row. And the week after if you drop a pto day on the Friday you can get another 6 days off in a row. The schedule rarely calls for you to work more than 4 days in a row.. I was just off 13 days and only used 4 pto days

i retired from a great job, 5 nights per week, home each morning, off each weekend, and on average only 9.5 hours each night.

only severe weather kept me out longer.

    average 47 hours weekly.

I do what I want to do it is how you go about planning your life. I did leave PA for 2 years did the 100 mile radius. A company wants a dependable good worker. I did dedicated to Connecticut only delivered at night so traffic wasn't my issue I got tired of that told them I didn't want to do that switched to local night work in PA.
My children are grown now I haven't done OTR in 10 yrs now running again until June or sooner & will be back to 3 or 4 days a week. I live the way I want to. All the best in your endeavors and planning your journey

That’s what I do now. You will have to find a private fleet and be willing to learn skills that is in addition to just driving. I made 95k last year because I don’t volunteer for extra work. If I’m out more than 50 hours a week then something went wrong.
No, I’m not giving up this job, been doing it over twenty years.

Deliver equipment like Sunbelt Rentals, concrete mixer, dump truck driver/ equipment operator for a small/medium sized excavation company, local delivery of building supplies, home heating oil/propane, dump truck for a landscape supply center, local company that has one or two trucks to mover their own stuff around, many forms of construction companies, septic/wastewater, Government (ie: roads dept., MUA landfill or water treatment plant), local farm that is constantly repositioning equipment between farms.

Just the other day I was reading a nearly identical thread amongst welders.

A lot of what we in the "skilled trades" sector do for ourselves is not bump our hourly much higher than a gas station manager, but just create an opportunity for ourselves to work a lot more than 9-5ers.

I guess the question is where do you guys find these types of jobs?

That's one thing that's a bit discouraging about the online trucking community (not just this forum) is that when questions about pay and hours worked get asked it seems everybody is making 100k per year and working 50 hours to get it, but nobody wants to say who they work for. I'm not saying people are lying about it. I'm saying it would be nice to at least say WHERE or HOW you got the job (online application, a friend got you in, etc. etc.) if you can't name the company. And at least say whether you're W2 with full benefits, and what sector of the industry you work for (LTL, tankers, flatbed, reefer, etc. etc.).

To the OP, I actually talked to an Old Dominion driver (P&D) about a month ago. He's working about 45-50 hours per week, M-F. I'm guessing OD at that terminal is close to fully staffed so they don't force their workers to work 58 - 63 hours per week, M-F. Starting wage at OD has got to be close to what it is at Estes and when I left Estes in late summer 2021, starting wage was $26.15 per hour.

    So $26.15 X 45 = $1176

    1176 X 52 = 61k per year

Pretty sure OD pays for sitting at home during the holidays like Estes did too. Plus great 401k match. Probably great health benefits.

But the only thing about P&D is that unless the company has a "bid run" type of system for P&D guys (probably only union places do that, Estes and to the best of my knowledge OD do not have "official" bid run systems, though some guys at my Estes Terminal had bid runs in all but name), then they can work you as much as they want to. So, you're never guaranteed to "only work X amount of hours per week" like you would at a union type of job with a bid run for P&D guys.
