Also, how does a "direct shipper" arrangement work?

Short answer is no they don’t. As long as you have operating authority you’re free to solicit anyone you want for direct work.

But if that guy wants to have someone else move that load he would have to have a broker license correct?

Or access to operating authority. I'm leased to a carrier, but I can get direct freight and run it through the carrier and take a cut if I can't run it and the carrier brokers it.

I assumed he meant someone with their own authority when he said authorized o/o. I figured his question had to do with a one truck show approaching shippers for business on their own without a broker.

If a trucking authority wants to haul direct for a shipper they can. If a trucking company wants to broker excess freight they need a brokerage authority. To run on owner ops through your trucking authority they must be leased on and on your insurance. If a brokerage wants to broker freight for a shipper obviously they need a broker authority.

Some companies do blur the lines like having owner ops with their own authority haul freight for the trucking companies authority and not a brokerage but it’s high risk and if there is a claim it all goes very bad quickly.
