I was just wondering if it is ever completely unheard of for someone fresh out of driver school to get a job running a truck locally? It just seems that everything I read says most jobs are OTR, gone for weeks at a time and the local jobs are few and far between but I am a newbie so have no idea. I would not be opposed to spending a night or two per week on the road but I have zero desire to be gone weeks at a time, come home for a day or day and a half and then be gone for weeks again. That might be okay for some but I would rather stay somewhat local even starting out. Is this possible and if so, can anyone recommend a company?
Do all new drivers go OTR?

I never did OTR. Started out with some local contract hauler running flatbed loads of shingles up to North Jersey every day. No “school” needed either.

I knew a couple of guys that started out running cement trucks right after getting a class A. Just depends on where you are and whats pops up if you in the right place and the right time so-to-speak.

I don't think my dad ever owned or even drove a truck with a sleeper. His driving career was about 25 years.

I started out local with an LTL company. You may have to do some dock work if you go that route but I am home everyday and off weekends.

What is your location?
Do you have any endorsements?
I'm sure @Chinatown will be around to give you some companies that are local in your area that is hiring. -
Food service is a very good job. Keep you healthy with exercise too.
US Foods, Sysco, etc.drew2083 Thanks this. -
I have not even been to school yet so no endorsements at all. I am in Concord, NC just outside of Charlotte. I am just weighing all the pros and cons of trucking. I appreciate all the responses so far.

BTW, tell me this ain't weird. I did not even create this radio852 username on my computer. I just came to this site and it was there and I have had this computer for at least a year. I could not even log out and start a new username. Very weird.
