As a brand new driver with an A license and all his endorsements, I got on with ltl work right away. Did that for 8 months, got tired of the schedule then went and did B class work delivering alcohol. Then I got offered a job with a construction company driving dump trucks and learning how to haul equipment. So thats what I do now.
So no, you dont have to go OTR right out of school.
Do all new drivers go OTR?

I believe it was easier for me to hire on local with the accident free miles from my OTR experience, but not necessary. There are are several drivers at my company that never did OTR.
I am glad I did a year OTR, just to get a feel for the experience, but I would have been fine without it...

Up until a few weeks ago I had never driven a sleeper truck. The company I am with now has fleet of W900's with sleepers. I still don't sleep in the truck though and I wont. Back to the yard every day.
