I did it for a smaller company that did mostly schools great for the home life only working 40-50 weekday and during summer they try to get everyone attest 20+ hours money wasn't the best but alot more free time to enjoy life

Do you think it's more demanding than a food service job like Sysco?

I didn't get any doe tags this year but im hoping to see a slammer. Not going archery, rifle and the late season with the flintlock
Thats when my dad would take all his vacation time -
Erratic sleep schedules are the bane of trucking. This is so unhealthy for you it will take years off your life. I dont think I will ever go back to reefer because of this.
Trucking in general is a job where you throw all of your hours into the job so that you can earn a decent paycheck. No one is going to pay you north of 70k a year to keep bankers hours. We sacrifice pretty much everything to make a bit more money than the average unskilled worker.
If you are looking for work/life balance you will probably have to leave trucking altogether -
The garbage truck driver that picks up garbage from my neighborhood gets paid $35 per hour, that's a sweet paycheck of $1,500 and more a week after all the taxes. And it is a local job with the set schedule. Is as good as some decent tech jobs. But he also told me that he has had shoulder injuries twice and had surgeries. I wouldn't do that, give me $1,000 a week job that involves no physical work lol

I think it depends on the route but we have really heavy loads most of the time. We go to many places without docs or forklifts and most of our trucks don't have lift gates. It can be a real mess at times.

Being local doesn't necessarily give you more free home time or a normal schedule. It was actually cheaper to stay OTR when I factored in gas, time to from work, and then being tired right after work. I did have Saturday and Sunday off, but a regional job did the same thing too. I probably drove more tired being local pulling over to catnap often, not all is what it seems.
Speed_Drums, Zoltan1a and Solo Soul Thank this. -
Someone called trucking "unskilled" job here. Really? I mean really? Is CDL a joke? Truckers are very very skilled specially the ones who have the higher endorsements and have experience. Truckers are like plumbers and electricians, very skilled. Why are airline pilots considered skilled and truckers not? The society is unfair towards truckers. Truckers deserve $150,000 a year, at least. They were working their tails off during the pandemic to ####ing feed people.
Zoltan1a Thanks this. -
You really hit the nail on the head with that one! He'll have a set routine for sure but still won't have a social life at all.Speed_Drums Thanks this.
