Anyone that has to run 55 to make money and actually considers that small aamount you save making money is hauling CHEAP add freight
groundpounder, LandShark and Cowmobile Thank this. -
Tell that to my co-worker who received a citation for driving 50 in a 65....minimum speed limit is 45....after he was rear ended by someone not paying attention. Because he was cited, he got to go pee in a cup (the other car was towed from the scene). He also has CSA 2010 points as a result of the wreck, since it was a DOT recordable wreck...and those points are worse because he received the citation for the wreck.
You can THINK you'll be OK, but the fact of the matter is you are an obstruction to the flow of traffic. It doesn't matter if you are in the right lane, you are still a hazard to the safety of the other motorists on the road with you. You are NOT "safe" while driving 55 in a 75, even if the minimum speed limit is 45...and the other guy's lawyer will eat you alive when you get rear ended. Your insurance company will be settling with the motorist who hit you (they win), and your premiums will be going up (unless they decide to drop you...either way, you lose). -
I can't answer for anyone but myself so I won't....
Did I run at 55mph ?? no, not ever....not even in the posted 55mph states..
Did I fudge my log book ?? of course I did, I did whatever it took to make money, period...and I make no apologies for it..
This is trucking its a cut throat scum bag industry where if you don't get them they will surely get you at some point you'll learn that in time..
good luck with that lease program.. -
Anyone driving a truck that doesn't realize they will most likely be faulted, for anything out of the ordinary, in case of an accident has some serious rose colored glasses on.
groundpounder Thanks this. -
The lawyer will be looking at your log books...and comparing them to fuel receipts, BOL's, credit card receipts, motel receipts, cell phone records, the security logs at shippers and receivers, toll receipts, DOT inspections, etc...ANYTHING they can get their hands on which places you at a specific location at a specific time will be cross referenced with your log books. The fact that your carrier's safety department has only caught one or two "infractions" doesn't mean anything. Once the lawsuit is filed, they'll be seeking court orders for any and all records which can be used to pinpoint your specific location at a specific time...and you had better hope everything matches up.
And you are correct, there is no laws stating that big trucks cannot drive 55 mph...however, there ARE laws against obstructing the flow of traffic.
Utah:
Indiana:
Georgia:
Most states are going to have something similar on the books.
Black_379 Thanks this. -
Considering the fact that i am NEW and learning about this industry , of course im not goin to be hauling the nest paid freight. So there for i try to keep my fuel cost low. -
It doesn't matter if you're new or if you've been around the block a few times....you still need to know what it costs you to operate your truck, and reject loads that aren't profitable.

55 in a 60 mph state highway in GA is not obstructing traffic, and the movement is still at 91% of the posted speed. Now i know my limits on traveling that slow, and if there was a problem with my traveling that slow, Im sure the Motor carrier inspector would of pulled me over in IN, 3 days ago as he passed and susprisling waved. I would of got pulled over in MO, 2 full growns sitting there as a trotted by , using there gun. Weatherford, OK OKhwy Patrol passed me, Im sure if it was such a safty issue, One of the many bears that passed me would of pulled me over. My logs are always correct. I dont fudge them period. You should not have to, I just want to know if any one runs at 55 100% of the time and can still manage 3000 miles. If your posts have nothing to do with that , then dont waste your time.

I know what my costs are to operate my truck. My cost's will be $225.00 to $275.00 a week less, AVG 3000 miles a week running at 55. legally
