They aren't really that expensive. And they are worth their weight in gold to us.

If you don't use an Atlas, I'd have to question your status as an OTR. At least one that's irregular route.
GPS will burn you, and I swear you can hear it laugh when it does.

I am in school now and we just did this map reading thing but I should back up a little.
I just went on vacation from CT to NC drove down & back. I told the school I wanted work to do so they gave me the “road bible” and the school bible.
I know how to read a map so when in NC I opened the road bible and I freaked out and closed it right back up! Well a few hours later I did reopen it and was able to see where I was and where our next stop was.

Back at school in class I was able to map from point A to B but some of the finer things like what rest areas had bath rooms or the 3 drops were golf courses. I was able to do the mileage, toll roads and how many tolls and the big one weight stations.

As has been said open it look over the front pages as it will tell you what you will be looking at and plan out a few trips. Start with someplace you know like around home so you know what you are looking at and move out from there.
    Good luck

You'll be thankful the first time you hear on the CB that there is a bad backup and the old hands start calling out ways to bypass the backup. Grab that atlas and confirm the route.

A little over a month ago, I purchased the laminated spiral-bound 2015 Rand McNally Deluxe Atlas for $29.99. This was at a Flying J on I70 in western Pa.....the $60 some are paying seems like a lot, unless I got it on sale or something. Maybe they are on sale when first released??

I got my 2014 for 29.99 at a Love's in Missouri when it was current, but not just released. Appears to be the competitive rate among truck stops. I've seen them more expensive, but the 29.99 is easy to find in the places I run.

Is it possible for an OTR truck driver to get by WITHOUT having any of these electronic devices at all, inside of his or truck whatsoever, in this day and age?
    1) computer
    2) GPS
    3) smartphone or cell phone
    4) CB radio

Yes. Except for the CB. We did it before. We could do it again. Those things made trucking a little easier. But they aren't the be all/end all.
