They are good especially when running permitted load ' the GPS can't send you around some of the dummest routes possible , so in that case better familiarize the route by studying it out on the atlas , I sometimes use electronic map for more detail on towns and or smaller roads ect . But it is valuable to have atlas , espesially nice to see mile marked exits and such.

My Atlas has been on my passenger seat for every mile I've driven a truck. It's an essential part of every trip plan. I recently had my gps freeze in downtown new jersey. Didn't care though because my route was planned out with my Atlas and written in my notebook.

Back when OTR it was Atlas for route decisions and google maps for actual delivery location. I wouldn't trust anything but satellite images for those last few miles before delivery/pickup.

I've been reading/studying atlases since I was about 6 or 7. Trip planning and such for imaginary trips/vacations. So naturally I took well to this profession. All I can suggest you do is read the atlas. Study one state a night or something like that. Notice the main interstates and how US highways work as well in the system. When you are out on the road, before you even use your GPS unit, plan out your trip using the atlas. Once you have your trip planned out by using the atlas, then punch it into the GPS and see the directions it gives you. Then go back to the atlas and see where it's sending you instead. Sometimes the GPS will send you on stupid routes, other times it'll show you good routes you never even considered.

The large type RMMCA is exclusive to the Petro/TA chain, and is now laminated, where before the paper was coated with a thin film.

It's also not updated every year. Twice the number of pages for most maps.
