I'm looking to obtain my CDL and become a company OTR driver. Do the drivers pay for replacing flat tires or other damage that occurs to the truck while they're driving? Thanks in advance for everyone's help.

It depends on what the damage is. If you damage stuff due to being stupid, your company has the right to try to get you to pay for it. Tires blow for many reasons. If you run over a curb and bend a rim, you might have to pay for both the rim and the tire. That would come down to company policy. But if the tire comes apart or you hit something unavoidable then no, you don't pay.

The first thing you have to remember is no matter what happens out there, ALL damage comes from hitting a deer or other small animal. Period.

That's right. You don't pay for anything like that.
Where is your location; we'll try to help you find a decent starter company.
@Need4Speed - Will you attend a private cdl school or a trucking company cdl school?

As others have said, no, you are not required to pay for things.

However, you may want to pay out of your pocket to cover some things.

I got stuck in the mud once.
If I called the company to get me out they would have tagged that as a preventable accident.
I chose to pay for the tow truck to get me out, and so to keep it off the record.
There was no damage to the truck however.

But tires and things that would be out of my control... no.
    The company pays for that.

Thanks to you all. I'm currently living in South Carolina and plan to attend a public community college to obtain my CDL. I've learned a wealth of information (including info. on starter companies) by using the Search function on this website.

In all my years, as a company driver, I don't recall paying for anything, but I didn't ever do a lot of damage anyway.( that sure changed when I got my own, I mean paying for stuff, not more damage) My union job, running over a curb and blowing a tire was considered a "chargeable" offense. Like 3 "chargeable's", and you got some kind of disciplinary action. Once, I dragged a set of duals on a trailer, (frozen brake) on my last day at a job, ground them both flat ( and I didn't go very far either, they grind off fast) and I even offered to pay for them, but the boss said no. Just a few small infractions aren't a big deal, we've all had them, goes with the job but if it becomes a regular thing, it shows you could be leading up to the "Big One". And bosses don't like "Big One's".

We have never had a driver pay for anything, BUT, with that said, esp. in my business, I don't think it would be a bad idea to have a SMALL percentage charge. Driver's can and do think differently about taking a chance IF it is going to cost them, I just think it keeps everyone on their toes???

I have, and it was the dumbest thing I've ever seen. When the guard at a shippers hands you a map, has you sign the log in sheet that you received the map and that you have been told to follow the signs to the other end of the complex and do not turn because of the lack of clearances between buildings and you ignore all of that, then you deserve to pay for the damages.
