I was told that by another driver, “accessible without a key”
Problem I have with that is..Peterbilt actually mounts them in the driver’s side box which a key is needed to open. Both 389’s and also a KW T-680 I had were this way.

I’ve had several inspections and never was a problem.. Possibly I’ve just been lucky with the inspections?

I know in 'normal' environments thay require OSHA stuff. Those inspection tags are required and be up to date. Now then, the 'inspection' was little more than the safety guy, who had the proper certificate to do such inspection, would simply look at it, make sure the gage still showed it was full and nothing was leaking anywhere and then he'd update and sign the tag. I spent 2 days going around with our safety guy updating all the fire extinguishers we had at a half dozen assorted facilities. I was the Local Union President at the time and heavily involved with the safety program and had to accompany him while he did that (It only had to be a Union rep, didn't have to be the president. But, I was available). In reality, he and I had a easy, enjoyable, 2 days doing the task and it was a pleasant diversion from our normal duties.

Yes, mount them. A loose extinguisher flying around the cab during a wreck will brain you.
The yearly inspection requirement is just one more thing for the DOT to nail you for if you piss them off during the inspection. It's better to keep them up to date.
Also, HAZMAT carriers require different sizes and type of extinguishers and they definitely should be inspected every year.

Ours are mounted by the driver seat. Tanker hazmat. No problem with any DOT inspections. Company has been mounting fire bottles like this for decades. F49B1EAF-2914-4A64-A2EA-D1DD95FFE051.jpeg

You see a truck with a British Columbia plate on it it’ll say “fire extinguisher inside” on it somewhere. To be honest I don’t know about regs in the other provinces. I always just marked my trucks to avoid having that conversation at the Golden scale.

Three. Lol. My FLD needed a key and my new 579 needs a key. I haven’t had any issues.

Mine is mounted exactly as @mustang190 . Right next to the seat on the floor.

A wise old regional safety driector for Chem Leaman, going back to the days of slide show safety meetings, advised to not use the fire extinguisher on situations outside the cab as it won't be enough for a 4 wheeler fire, etc.

He then told the room that the extinguisher was there to save the driver in an accident.

It should be enough to knock down the flames in the cab and and once empty was sufficient for you to knock out the windshield and get your butt out of there....

I had to clean up the language he used.

Actually training films and videos don't have the flexability of slide shows.
No inserting those strategic 'topless' slides aimed at waking up the room and definately not acceptable in this PC world.

    Our loss!

After breaking the mounting bracket and zip tie tag on the extinguisher from constantly putting my tool box and other things on top of it, I finally relocated the mounting location for the new one I bought today.

Wish I would have done this when I first bought the truck. Not sure why the factory mounts them laying down right in the middle of the side box on the 389s?

Couldn't even get two of the screws out of the old bracket so just cut off what I could. 4 Rivets to mount the new one, super easy. This is how they should come, IMO.
