I having been reading over the threads looking for advice from long time drivers and I'm just sitting here saying to myself OMG are trucking companies this bad? I know not all are as bad a some say and then there are those that are THAT BAD I'm sure. I just want to know if I begin this career will I be able to support my wife and kids. Not see'ing Dad will be ok to me as long as my kids dont want for things they need. I'm starting over in a career that I dont no much about. I tell you one thing I have met some of the best people in the USA since I started trainning. Old truck drivers meet and greet like the people this southern boy is use too. But the new drivers seem so untalkative to say the lest. Now I was raised to never leave a friend or co-worker unless you are sure that you have done everything in your power to see that they are safe and ok. The attitude I get from the new drivers is one that they could care less if you died in your sleep or bleed to death. Really I just want to know are there still those driver's out there that do unto other's as you have them do unto you.

Things really started to change alot, I guess back in the 80's. Older guys would probably say sooner, basically as demand grew for drivers, quality suffered. It's just a "job" for so many now. Truck stop dinners, where drivers use to sit and BS have been replaced by fast food joints. It is what you make of it, I would suggest you get the experience you need to get a local job, so you can spend time with the kids.

Of course there are. I think a lot of drivers these days are also overly cautious as far as stopping to help. Plus you have technology now that takes the place of the road hero's pulling over to help. Now a days your phone can change your tire and can also be used as a heart difibulator. There are some companies that prefer you not stopping on the interstate also. I think all and all though these people are still out there and I know if I see you on the side of the road I am going to make sure you are all right!

Depending on where you look. You'll should be able to find something that will get you home on weekends, possibly every night.

And yes, many companies are bad. You just have to sort through them.

Drivers.... are not what they used to be. But that's not a matter of inexperience or such. It's about the way they were raised.

I live a couple hundred mile north of you. There were no less than 50 truck driving ads in this weeks paper. NONE of who I would work for.

2 companies close to you. Baldwyn Transfer or McElroy would be good places to start.

Take everything you read here with a grain of salt. Me personally, I just complain about things that are either unfair or make no sense whatsoever (especially my past and current employer). Can't really complain to someone about the company, so I come here to relieve stress. Or something.

As far as unsocial, untalkative drivers, I've been seeing ALOT of those lately. Go to greet someone and it's usually grunts, moans, and shrugs.

As far as your last statement regarding helping others, comraderie is basically dead. There are very little drivers that are willing to help other drivers on the road. Even with all the things that are going on, don't let that discourage you if you have an interest in driving over the road. Just give it a try. No one says that you have to stay forever, because being forced to do something that you don't want to do would just suck!

Hello, Hossfly and Welcome to the Site:)

I have met many caring helpful drivers. I drove for three years and really appreciated the help and kindness. Drivers do watch out for one another, no, not every driver is as kind, but most are.
    Best to You!!!

It's like any other career out there. You work hard and sooner or later you'll be noticed. When you first start out you have to start right from the beginning to build your reputation. You'll have to work harder during the first few years but then you gain experience and move up to better companies. Some guys expect the best right off the bat and then complain when they don't get good loads. Put yourself in the dispatchers shoes. Who would you give the better loads to, a guy that's been complaining all the time or a guy that does his or her job with no problems.

You have to be very careful about stopping to give help. It's much better to contact them by radio then make a call for them on the cell phone. I say that because problems can happen if you stop. I haul gasoline and I never stop unless it's a extreme emergency and no one else is around. It just takes common sense but you can't stop for everyone. You can try to help everyone but stopping requires your sense to be on alert.

Thank you for the company names Dance694u I'll put them on my list as possible good employment. I have researched every possible company I can think of to see what might be my best fit after school. As for myself I was born and raised in a town with one traffic light and a population of about 2500 tops. Its gonna be kinda like a fish out of water for me on the road but getting to see places I have only heard of or seen on the TV is kinda gonna be AWSOME!!! Yes I am one of those backwoods kids that dont know much about nuttin other than working hard in the woods cutting timber trying to scratch a living together for my family but I tell you what guys I'm so excited to get a chance to see the USA. I know later the bubble of excitement will burst but for now WOOHOO.
