Steel toes for work will be better, IMO.
However, see what your employer Requires, and go from there.

Depends on how you like walking through snow and mud, and whether your toes can deal with something heavy being dropped on them. Sneakers are fine for in the truck though.

I would say a pair of boots for the customers and comfortable shoes for everything else. You might end up in some mud pit wishing you had some boots you could just hit with a water hose

You ain't a trucker unless your wearin boots. Tuck you jeans in the tops of them, look like a rodeo star. Can wear construction boots and shorts, but people might confuse you with a member of the village people.
Seriously, depends on where you go, and who you work for. Some places require steel toes, some don't care, some say must me leather type shoes, or no sandals.
I would guess flat bedders have a greater need for steel toe boots, then say a dry van or reefer driver, just do the more industrial areas they go. My personal opinion is clean tennis shoes are appropriate for most places, but I do keep a pair of boots in the truck. The ole sweat pants, dirty t-shirts and flip flops, not really a place for that cept inside your truck, doesn't really convey a professional image. It is not hard to look decent and clean. But thats just me, we long lost professionalism.
