only if you are hauling freight.
I live in TX and bought my truck in FL here is what I did.
Get insurance, this you have to have. either e temp 30 day policy like I did or your regular insurance. 30 day is expensive but I didn't plan to run it for a long time after the trip home.
then go to whereever you do your vehicle registrations and tell them you want a "one way" permit for it. it's one of those cardboard temp plates and you have to tell them where it is coming from and where it is going to and the general route you will take and which stats. it is like a $5 permit. you can put it on the license plate bracket or just tape it in the window. you may need one for the trailer too, i'm not sure I just had the truck. only limitation is you can't haul freight -
oh and if they try to tell you that permit is not good for a truck then tell them too look it up. they have a book with the guide lines for each permit. when I went in to talk the head lady told me about that permit then when I went back to get it she wasn't there and they tried telling me that permit was no good. I made them read the guidlines and it says right in there you can use it for a tractor trailer as long as it's not engaged in interstae commerce ....ie hauling freight.

This may help http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/registration-licensing/registration-USDOT.htm .
As MedicineMan stated , you are not hauling cargo so no DOT number is required . Now if someone else was being paid to drive the truck for you the truck itself would be the cargo and they would need to have authority and display their number . -
I got a question since I'm 18 and I go buy a flatbed trailer in lets say Georgia. Can I legally go down there and pick up the trailer and bring it back home even though I can't cross state lines until I'm 21?

I appreciate all the help guys!! you hit the nail on the head...
