hey guys, ive always used a log on all my older gigs but this new job im not running a log at all. First off the company doesnt supply drivers with logs, they want us to pay for it. Im an employee. Never worked for anyone who didnt have logbooks for the drivers. secondly, the shuttle I do is all in NJ about 40 miles up the turnpike, drop load come right back. Do i need a log for this?We had a meeting and the bosses arent even sure if i need a log. I havent been using one for bout 9 months. all the other drivers have logs but they go in pa,ct,ny,de and stuff. I only do these shuttles
do i need log for local shuttles

No you dont need to log unless you go past 100 mile air radius of your work reporting location or work past 12 hrs in a shift.
It may be more than 100 mile radius now but can't remember if that has changed but since you on go 40 you are good.
When I did local work my company provided me with an "in leau of logs" letter in case ever got stopped. -
Do you stay within 100 air miles of your home terminal?
Does your day start & stop at the same location?
Does your shift last 12 hours or less?
Do you have at least 10 hours off between shifts?
Does your employer keep track of your hours?
If yes to ALL questions, you do not need to log. -
You can punch a time clock and be good. But if your employer's only way to track your time is a logbook it's their choice to decide. If they say log you must log. Though you log all activity on line 4 from start to finish besides breaks. Being it's a voluntary choice they are responsible for your time keeping they have to pay for the logbooks. They can't have the best of both worlds.
baha Thanks this. -
Keep in mind that if you go outside the 100 air mile radius or over 12hrs you have to have a log. The place I'm at had several drivers get ticketed for that. DOT could also shut you down for 10hrs because you don't have a record for the last 7 days, or at least until you get some kind of record of your time. Could doesnt mean will, but not a conversation I want to have with a trooper.
I'd run a paper log anyway to cover your butt. Its your cdl and CSA score. Log books are cheap.
