My Detroit 12.7 factory rebuild in my company glider blew out of the tube pretty heavily with 350000 on the clock.
Shop mechanics said every other truck of ours does the same. Didn’t burn a drop though.
I think the winter idling started it in my truck I ran.
Do I need overhaul? Detroit 60 series 12.7

Every 2 round trips from the farm too the field add 2 quarts or 3 every 100 miles. Ran on 7 cylinders and ran like this for two hauling seasons until I left.Rideandrepair, Intothesunset, Bean Jr. and 1 other person Thank this. -
Side note my personal semi a 1997 International with a Cummins n-14 with a million 175 on it with no rebuild just heads freshened up and milled couple 100 thousand ago
I have a oil analysis from blackstone that says it is in excellent shape with no significant detection of anything out of the ordinary
Side note on Analysis “Nice Engine for its age and mileage “.
Truck has been sitting out in the middle of a open field on top of a hill all this past winter
Go out there in 10 degree weather and crank it up once a month.
Took about 2 more seconds than usual but caught right on and idled smoothly.
You look at the stack and you can’t even tell the engine is running.
I had my buddy follow me home when I bought it last year. He said all you could see is the heat cloud. No smoke blue or black whatever
The crankcase blows clean as can be also.
This is with 1175000 on the clock. Almost 4 times the mileage that is on my company trucks Detroit factory rebuild 12.7 that smokes like a chimney on startup and accelerating after idling.
Not to mention all the blue smoke pouring out of the crankcase tube.Rideandrepair, Wajid8705, Intothesunset and 1 other person Thank this. -
Million is not some miraculous number when a overhaul is needed.
Oil pressure is never exact on every engine. Ask 100 S60 owners, and you'll get 100 different responses. And nothing is wrong with that...
My S60 has 1.34 million miles, never been inframed and uses about a gallon every 7-9k miles. Oil pressure at highway speeds is 56ish and at idle 38ish. And I usually don't change my oil before 50k miles.shogun, Rideandrepair, Wajid8705 and 4 others Thank this. -
Got a brand new factory Detroit reman series 60 ddec 4 in my glider. Hot driving is 50 psi . Hot idle is 30 psi. Has been this way since new.
I've never seen a Detroit with 75 psi hot ever.Rideandrepair, thaistick, Bean Jr. and 1 other person Thank this. -
My two cents is that you should send in your oil sample and change the oil now.
Use whatever oil these guys tell you you're supposed to use make sure your air filter is good and your fuel filters are clean and see if that helps. Maybe that's accurate that over 8,000 miles it will burn more oil.
You'll know better when you get the oil sample back.Rideandrepair, Bean Jr. and Wajid8705 Thank this. -
Hot running is 50 psi
Hot idle is 20 psiRideandrepair Thanks this. -
Personally I think your fine. It's got some miles on it and maybe a bit more blowby I'm sure. Nothing to be alarmed about. I've seen lots series 60s go a long long long time drinking a bit oil and lots blowby. Run it.
