American Trucker, for some reason my phone does not want to quote your post?
If at all possible, I do try and look at more than just the signs. Sometimes that works, sometimes it doesn't, and sometimes it's just not a good idea to get the truck close enough to judge. Just depends on the situation.
Lowest I've been under so far was 12'2" with tons of clearance, but I've also seen 13'5" that I couldn't make. Never can tell until you see it. -
A GPS is just one tool that I use to assist me in getting to a shipper/receiver. I still rely on my trusty old trucker's atlas for most of my navigating, but I also use Mapquest for an overall satellite view of the location I'm delivering to. It helps enormously for getting the lay of the land in the area you need to go. I use my GPS mostly for ETA's and mileage. If I'm more than a day away from picking/delivering a load I have it set to miles to destination. The day of, I flip it to estimated time of arrival.
So short answer to the OP's question. You don't need a GPS, but they can be helpful if used properly. Don't rely on one 100% to get you where you're going, though.Big Don Thanks this. -
I have CoPilot live 8 truck on my droid. It has some issue, but for the most part direction s is not one of them.

I love the features of the TND 710 and like it's been said, don't rely solely on a GPS. It is a tool and like any tool, there is a right way and wrong way to use it.I like the HOS log timers and warning feature. It's nice to see your ETA for each stop as well. The TND 510 has the same features but with a 5" screen. I've found a street price of 399 for the 710. If you could find a factory refurbished that would save some bucks but I haven't found one yet, just the TND 500 and 700 are available in refurbished.

Obviously, if the GPS tells you to turn down a gravel road leading to a dead end corn field in Ill... Don't (the think part must kick in)... :dink: -
It is a tool
The maps are getting better. If you buy an old unit it is a good idea to update the maps
