Years back I ran electronics for a van line and spent a lot of hours working in the trailer padding and securing high $$$ stuff. Or course I got paid extra for the handling too. Many times made more off of that than the driving part. Went the Landstar after that and had some tire loads that I had to roll the tires to the back of the trailer, 4-6 stops a load. Got paid real good to do that. Now, I run a tanker. We run to pretty much the same places all the time so at some I have to hook up hoses and others not. Most send me to the break room and come get me when they are done.

Unloaded the entire trailer with a pallet jack at a little store the other day...great workout, got me down the road faster, and built good customer relations for next time I deliver there...I dont mind it, but would be nice to get some of that lumper money....

all Depends on what you haul & what the procedures are for what you haul.... finger print loads mean you are going to put alot of finger prints on that frieght, tankers use hoses, car haulers drive off their loads, food loads sometimes need to be restacked a certain way ( tie & high) alot of times the shipper doesn't want drivers on their dock for safety purposes & such.... I once saw a driver run a whole pallet of mayonnaise electric pallet jack & all right off the dock and then just said oops sorry I didn't know how to use this pallet jack but I think it was really because he didn't want to unload the trailer, so don't be a poor sport like this driver was because it really makes a big mess to clean up, not to mention a disappointed costumer

99% of my loads are Zero touch, the 1% is one customer where tailgating the load is built into a very good paying rate. Anything else, if they tell me it's driver unload or driver assist, I call Dispatch, they call the broker, advise the broker that there is Zero free time, and the rate is $75/hr (minimum) beginning at minute 1, with a minimum charge of 1 hr. Funny, I've not had to driver assist lately.

You van folk need to grab a few loads of tires, and realy big truck tires to boot in august in fl, youll loose 10lbs every load, you throw em to the rear where 2-3 waiting on you, those tires hold heat and in the sun that vans like a oven, nothing about it yelled good ole days.

Notice how most of the posts start with years back when, or back in the day! I'll tell you what, Most don't even sweep the trailer out. They'll wash out before they try and get their Rollie butts in the back and work. Believe it or not but I've seen some that have an industrial blower the kind that Pedro uses in his landscaping job. Ridiculous. Ever seen the older ladies put load locks on? Sheesh. After a repower, you find the locks down on the ground along side the wall like they expect the loaders to install them. Truckers are lazy creatures. Nothing will ever change that.

Hi wedge, reading your post makes my back ache again. I used to unload tires that came in on RR containers, only I'd put them on pallets the warehouse provided. The car tires weren't so bad, but the truck tires were the worst, and there would be nothing on the bill from the RR indicating what was on the container. You'd open the door, and that sinking feeling, darn, it's truck tires. I'd be there for hours unloading them, and I got paid to unload them, matter of fact, the unloading time paid more than dragging the container there did. Dispatch knew when I was done, don't put me on anything else, as I had to lay down for a while.
