If you have good mufflers, nobody will ever know if you use the Jake. Those ordinances are for the people with straight pipes rattling the windows when they hit the Jake.

    I KNOW, right?

    I can get my train

    upload_2024-1-25_4-59-13.png
    And my cup and ball

    upload_2024-1-25_5-0-11.png

And still have room for snacks. But they need to be something like skittles, or gum drops, or that kind of thing - never anything melted. I once put chocolate covered pretzels in there and oh boy did I get yelled at.

How does a jake help with safety? It's a supplemental braking system designed to extend the life of the pads and to help keep them cool on long extended downgrades. That's not where you see "no jake brake" signs. You see those in small towns with relatively low speed limits. If you're relying on your jakes for safe stopping in town you're already way behind the 8 ball.

Oh, you get these super truckers that have them on all the time thinking they are saving money on brakes but not realizing what they spend in added fuel because of them is WAY more than the cost of the brakes they are "saving"...

Using the Jake doesn’t increase fuel consumption, the fuel system is at idle when using the Jake.
I use my Jake every time I slow down, why not? I don’t rattle windows either, I’ve got mufflers and can Jake right past those signs and nobody even knows.

Fuel use doesnt increase because you are using the jake, this is true.

Doesnt mean you arent burning more fuel. If your jake is on and your foot isnt on the gas, then the jake is slowing you down. These times, when it is better to just coast rather than to actively decelerate, is when you are wasting the fuel. You waste it to accelerate back to the speed you would have been at if you hadnt used the jake to begin with...

In other words it will slow you down further than you NEED to, and the part where you are wasting the fuel is to get back up to speed. More fuel effient (and cheaper in the long run) to just coast and use your brake as needed than to use the jake. It was made for downgrades. Use it for that...

If I don't need to slow down why would I use my jakes at all? Why would I use brakes at all?

You're going to increase fuel consumption if you use ANY brakes when you don't need to slow down.
