Hi all, first time posting but I've been lurking here unregistered for a month or so.
I'm a recent trucking school grad with a long, stable work history. I retired January 1 of this year after a 20 year career in the public safety sector. I'm also a veteran (USMC '88-'92) and I have a bachelors degree. I'm drawn to the trucking industry for several reasons: first of all it's something completely different. Also after surrounding myself with rapists, murderers and thieves for 20 years I'd just rather get away from people for a while.
About 10 days ago I submitted an application online to a trucking company which shall remain nameless (hint: the name is similar to that of the character played by Pat Harrington Jr. on One Day At A Time).![]()
About 3 days later I got a phone call and an email from a recruiter asking me to call her back. I was on a training drive when she called so I couldn't answer, but I did attempt to call her back about two hours later. The call went straight to her answering machine and I left a message with all of my details. I tried again the following day (Friday) and got her answering machine a second time. Thinking maybe she had taken off for a long weekend, I let it go and tried again the following Monday afternoon. Still nothing.
It has now been a week since this recruiter asked me to call her. I'm not desperate to sign on with the first company that will have me and I don't want to appear like I am, but I am interested in hearing what they have to offer.
Should I take the lack of response from this recruiter as a lack of interest from the company? Do I write it off as piss poor professionalism on her part and try to contact somebody else? Or should I take my ball and go home (to Werner)?
Do recruiters typically not return phone calls?

OP you are in the drivers seat here. Patty is giving good advise except I wouldn't even call again. There are hundreds of recruiters and they all want their little cut. Drop any generic online app and you will get a call before you log off the computer. Don't worry about the first recruiter.
I wish you the best of luck out here. It's a lot different then you probably expect. -
Yes this is common throughout life, so I would just keep calling companies because with the thousands of companies out there, you should find one to call you back.

Recruiters are busy especially on modays playing catchup for the weekend and it's understandable and normal not returning an applicants call for hrs to over a day.But if you call many times and they still haven't returned your call something is wrong. They may have found a flaw in your application. But that's still no excuse and it shows what kind of company you're dealing with.
taxihacker66 and Grijon Thank this. -
