If your going to work for Schneider you're going to be hauling anything from ink and wax to some really nasty acids. You could get on a food grade only dedicated route, just depends.

Everything you haul will have a different weight and density which are contributing factors. Which they are going to teach you about.

Learn the safety procedures and follow them. They are there for a reason.
    Good Luck to you

Thanks. Do you know if their tanker tractors have a fixed 5th wheel or does it slide?

I believe they do. Axle weight is usually not an issue I think they run mostly smooth bore trailers.

Many tank washes make a crowded Pilot look like an empty parking lot. At least trailers have no tail-swing to worry about and they are only 48 feet long. It's so much easier to park a tanker, except for the slosh and with an automatic transmission.

tanker 5 th wheels are 90 % of the time fixed, if you do have to move one , follow the advice earlier. Most of the time you get a empty weight to start and then a loaded weight. ( milk comes to mind) , gas and diesel are by gallons , so you worry more about gross.all the fuel tanker trucks i drove were fixed 5 th wheels with standard tanks

My last 2 trucks have had air-slide 5th wheel. I've left my 5th wheel all the way back since day one and have never had a problem. Scale houses are usually looking at gross weight and aren't patient enough to wait for the tank to settle to see if you are 200 over on the drives. I'm new to tankers.

Man now I am really looking forward to getting going in tanker yanking! Playing around with the sliding tandems and fifth wheels was the bane of my existence when I last drove dry van 2.5 years ago. Methinks I am going to like this very much.

Tankers are a good way to go. I've see a lot of drivers move to tankers from flatbed or van but I very seldom see one move back.
One of the guys posted on this thread to watch out for what you haul. That's gospel. Some of tanker cargo can be downright deadly and you don't get any second chances if you screw up.
If you have any questions about a product find out the answers from the shipper, the customer, or your office. That's how you'll get to be an old tanker driver and that's the goal.

That's great advice! I've never carried hazmat before so I am going to ask beacoup questions at orientation.

A lot of people run down Schneider but they do give good tanker training. Pay attention and never get in a hurry. And if something doesn't seem right, Stop.
