do tanker drivers sit as often as van drivers?

    I have this new job hauling Liquid CO2 and we don't even stop at all. The only stopping we do is for loading/unloading.

    Foodgrade tanks can't sit long, loaded or empty. A wash tag is good for 96hrs(empty), and various products have limited time and temp window to accept product

    96 hours is 4 days . You don't consider 2 or 3 days long to sit ? The driver could have sat another day or 2 before the wash .

    I haul food grade and most places that I deal with a wash is only good for 24 hours. I have sat 18 hours once @ a customer who had a breakdown and I got paid from when I got there u til I left.

    Usually it takes me 45 mins to an hour to unload and a couple of hours to get a wash and load (where we go a lot of the places have a wash right there).

    I haul haz-mat [gas and diesel] and were not allowed to park in an unsecured area. I run locally and the company does not like us to stop unless its an emergency. pay is good hours are long :biggrin_25525:

    I've hauled food grade and now chemicals. Yes you can sit for hours at dairies as one driver pointed out when unloading but once you're washed out then usually you will get loaded pretty quick. Detention time with pay is virtually non existent in food grade IMHO, but in chemicals I'm paid for sitting. Once had to sit for close to half a day while the loading at one plant but I got plenty of detention pay for those lost hours. On the other end when unloading, not much time is wasted in unloading but as I'm paid by the increments of 30 mins anyway, so I really don't care.

    I am looking to get into the Bulk Tanker end and hauling Frac Sand in the San Antonio area. Anyone with Info, much appreciated. I am a bit concerned about not getting work and sitting around a lot. My last company put a baddd taste in my mouth with all of the sitting.

    I pulled tankers three years or so. Always by unload appointment. I never sat. They gave me a lie detector test once, One question, Is your log book true? / Yes, the machine blew up!:biggrin_2559:

    It really depends on the company. A good company will pay you detention pay, a not so good company they give you a line of BS along the lines of; "we don't get paid. So you don't get paid", "it's all factored into the rate", "it's part of the job".

    The company I'm with now has a straightforward detention policy. One hour is all the customer gets to get us loaded or unloaded and out of there facility. After that were on the clock till we leave. I did a round a couple of weeks ago and sat for 23 hours waiting to get loaded. The load itself paid about $300 to me, but the detention was over $400. I never got that pulling reefer, van, flatbed, etc.
