One thing to keep in mind is that(I've heard) Cali has a "no pursuit" policy. If you blow a Cali scale, they can't come after you for that alone.. If you're bobtailing, there's a 90% chance they won't even pass a second glance at you in or out of the scale. A couple months ago, I was down in San Diego talking to a couple of car haulers. One I them lives in and has been running California since the early 90's. He said he hasn't been in a scale in 3-4 years. He just doesn't stop.. I myself am down there almost every week and have run a few on accident and never been chased. (Of course, for the internet police), THIS IS NOT ADVICE, ONLY RECALLED EXPERIENCE!!!!
Do tractors bobtailing have to enter the state scales?

Back when my dad was alive, he asked me the same question. I told him that the truck has DOT numbers, drive through the scales and be polite if pulled in. My dad never had an issue.

State scales also check for registration etc not only weight. Ca. likes trucks bobtailing thru the scales because if they do inspection, much easier to inspect power only than truck/trailer. Inspection guy told me this !

I’ve had Cajon scales ask me if I wanted the trailer inspected also when he realized the tractor was mine and had a company trailer attached. I said yes, tractor only please. That’s rare though, depends who you get.
flood Thanks this.
